Dry farming in Algeria shows success despite low rainfall
James Johnston, U S consul, reports Algeria uses biennial culture to grow crops in semi arid zones with under 16 inches of rain. Plowing in December to March and shallow plows enable rain penetration. Harvest often uses Espirador. Wages remain low, but new settlers pay off holdings of about 16 dollars per acre after six to seven years.
