Irvine Woman Turns Poison Plant Into Monarch Hobby
Brenda Hartstein bought a milkweed plant at a Santa Barbara farmers market to attract monarchs to her Irvine yard. She watched caterpillars become butterflies, learning nature's mystery in her own garden while noting butterflies as pollinators. Butterflies are sold for classroom study and event releases at about $100 per dozen, with 15,000 to 20,000 species identified worldwide.
