Lakeside Middle School led Orange County schools in the 2013 Fire Up Your Feet program, earning $5,700 for first place after students staff and parents logged the most activity hours during October. A 1.25 mile run drew 700 participants, boosting Irvine Unified Rancho San Joaquin Middle School to fourth place and $100.
Irvine ranks second lowest among five Orange County cities in the 2013 Municipal Equality Index by the Human Rights Campaign. The city scored 54 out of 100, below California’s 76 and the national 57, with points for domestic partner benefits and hate-crime reporting, but gaps remain in nondiscrimination laws and municipal services.
