Irvine Co. built new towns from ranch roots in 1960s
Irvine Company plans the University Park and Turtle Rock communities from its ranch headquarters on Irvine Boulevard. Origins lie in agriculture and the Irvine family home offices. In 1960 Charles S. Thomas led a team to develop residential villages inspired by English town planning. See planning page 4.

Public weighs in on crime memorial designs in Santa Ana
Five final designs for an Orange County crime victims memorial were unveiled at the Old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana as part of a county effort to build a gathering place at William R. Mason Regional Park. Judges selected five from 59 entries worldwide. public comments are invited at the courthouse exhibit or ocparks.com. The winning design will be announced during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in April and fundraising will be privately funded.

Irvine duo earns state music educator honors
Irvine Unified visual and performing arts coordinator Brad Van Patten received the Outstanding Administrator Award, one of three in California, while Irvine High’s Bob Arzaradel won the Jazz Educator Award. Both are recognized for broad classroom impact and promoting diverse music culture. Van Patten began teaching in 1996 and notes Irvine’s campus wide art and music participation.
