The Congregational Church of Clay History 1842 to 1902

By Mrs. R. E. Brown the Congregational Church of Clay formed July 3 1842 with ministers Rev Charles Burnham and Rev Julius Reed. It grew from six members to a thriving later parish with a 1857 church and nearby parsonage. In 1902 Rev Zickafoose oversaw a modern church. The church upheld anti slave policy aided underground railway and Civil War efforts. It produced five ministers and several missionaries and influenced laws and moral questions of the day.

In plain clothes he preached with obvious enthusiasm until his tight shirt ripped, creating a loud crack as its back seam gave way. Pr Chilecote Collides With Maple Tree In Town Walk

Dr. Chilcote pioneer of Washington suffers facial injuries after walking into a tree on Fast Washington street. Nearsighted and unaware of the obstacle he breaks glasses and cuts brow lips and chin while repairing damage with plaster bandages. The incident ends with a quip about a soft maple saving his looks.

Crawfordsville's Underground Railroad Hub Revealed

In Crawfordsville during the slavery era the town was a hotbed of abolitionist activity. The House of all Nations served as a major station for the Underground Railroad with enslaved people sheltered by night and moved by day toward Columbus Junction and Canada. The house earned its name for its size and sheltering capacity.

Y. M. C. A. Secretary Goes to Lake Geneva

Harry Kreider leaves Washington with his family for Chicago and Lake Geneva where he will attend a two week Summer School for Y M C A workers. He plans a general administration course and a conference with other Y M C A workers. Lloyd Hill will serve as assistant during Kreider's absence.

Washington Ad Club Celebrates Seventh Anniversary Picnic

The Washington Advertising Club marked seven years with a picnic at Tourist Park hosted by members and guests including wives and friends. A premeal ball game ended in a tie, and hospitality centered on a generous spread provided by Mrs. Hedges, Mrs. Mc Daniel, and Mrs. Barclay.

Mayor's Office Scene Of Battle In Arrest

Clark Stockman was arrested by Marshal Edwards and brought before the city judge after a prior speeding charge. During the hearing he attempted to escape, was chased by officials, and recaptured. The mayor sentenced him to thirty days in the county jail for failing to appear and tampering with law enforcement.

Destitute Woman Sent to Kansas City After Detainment

A penniless, barefoot woman named Nina Williams, age thirty six, was found on the road from Fort Dodge to Washington with a deserted husband and no clear prison escape link. Investigations cleared her of crime, and she was given a ticket to Kansas City to join her mother and seek work.

Keota Counts 1027 After Recount

Keota appointed census enumerator Kate Glover to redo the census after initial results undercounted. She completed the repeat enumeration by the deadline and reported a total of 1027 residents, prompting praise for the progressive town.

Relic Walnut Box Door Shown From 1775 Found In Ohio

Winfield Sash and Door Company remodels a box door brought by W. W. Twinam of Crawfordsville from Ohio in 1845. The walnut piece measures about twenty inches by two feet by four feet with hand turned legs and a secret drawer bearing maker Isaac Thomas and date 1775. The Winfield mill is crafting a new top, promising another century and a half of use.

Hornets Nest Brigade Reunion Marks Shiloh Remembrance

Col. D. J. Palmer attends the Perry Iowa gathering as the lone survivor from the Hornets Nest Brigade at Shiloh in 1862. Seth Carris and Mr. Imbrie joined later. the clash lasted two days with three companies driven back and two captured before dusk.

Hoddy Rice Wins Javelin at Mid Western Meet

Hoddy Rice, a local boy, won the javelin at the Mid Western Amateur Athletic Union meet in Iowa City. He threw 173.47 feet to capture first place against competitors from Nebraska, the Dakotas, and Iowa, with Marshall of Iowa taking second.

Rock Island tested motor car transportation on the Des Moines and Keokuk branch through Oskaloosa. The experiment drew capacity patronage both ways, and if successful on this branch may be extended to all branch lines, though it does not affect Washington or its vicinity.

T. P. A. Holds Meeting at Birmingham Alabama

The National Convention of the T. P. A. in Birmingham drew about a thousand delegates and wives, focused on fair railroad rates and related issues. Mr. West praises the city’s hospitality, and next year’s event is set for Philadelphia with hopes for future Birmingham attractions.

Chicken Thieves Held in Keokuk County Jail

The sheriff jailed Wesley and Oran Hubbs for stealing chickens in Keota and Richland. They admit taking about forty fowls from Fred Sheets and Charley Stoutner farms. The youths, aged under thirty, are married and living near Rubio, and are held in Sigourney to face charges in both Keokuk and this county.

Wayland man badly injured in home grinding accident

Joseph Nebel of Wayland was seriously hurt Monday at his home when his hand touched a small circular saw on a motor driven emery stone. The injury severed his hand to the bones of the index finger and he was treated by Dr. Allen and in County Hospital.

Dayton agency seals major farm sale near West Chester

The J. D Dayton Land Company of West Chester handled a large land deal last week. The Lloyd Martin farm south of West Chester sold to Lafe Stout for 60000 dollars. The 214 acre property lies near the Stout homestead and reflects fair market pricing despite a countywide slump.

Sim Bailey Remembered by Pioneers in Shenandoah

A. S. Bailey of Galesburg Illinois known as Sim Bailey, aged 90, is recalled by friends for his early work on the Press under Wick ersham and later era editor H. A. Burrell. He visits Shenandoah to see old friends and his wife was Abbie Geatch. The community notes his long record and ties to Shenandoah and Washington.

Richmond Pioneer Joseph Prebyl Laid to Rest

Obituary notes the burial of Joseph Prebyl a longtime Richmond resident born in Bohemia March 24 1844 who died June 13 at age 81. He leaves a large family including eight children nineteen grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren with funeral services held June 15 at the Methodist Church in Richmond.

Exams for Teachers Now Being Given

The county examinations are being given at the office of the County Superintendent today through Friday. The new subject is Government and Constitution covering basic republican principles and the U S and Iowa constitutions. It will not replace civics. Uniform county certificates issued before June 1920 are unaffected.
