The Congregational Church of Clay History 1842 to 1902
By Mrs. R. E. Brown the Congregational Church of Clay formed July 3 1842 with ministers Rev Charles Burnham and Rev Julius Reed. It grew from six members to a thriving later parish with a 1857 church and nearby parsonage. In 1902 Rev Zickafoose oversaw a modern church. The church upheld anti slave policy aided underground railway and Civil War efforts. It produced five ministers and several missionaries and influenced laws and moral questions of the day.

Crawfordsville's Underground Railroad Hub Revealed
In Crawfordsville during the slavery era the town was a hotbed of abolitionist activity. The House of all Nations served as a major station for the Underground Railroad with enslaved people sheltered by night and moved by day toward Columbus Junction and Canada. The house earned its name for its size and sheltering capacity.

Relic Walnut Box Door Shown From 1775 Found In Ohio
Winfield Sash and Door Company remodels a box door brought by W. W. Twinam of Crawfordsville from Ohio in 1845. The walnut piece measures about twenty inches by two feet by four feet with hand turned legs and a secret drawer bearing maker Isaac Thomas and date 1775. The Winfield mill is crafting a new top, promising another century and a half of use.

Chicken Thieves Held in Keokuk County Jail
The sheriff jailed Wesley and Oran Hubbs for stealing chickens in Keota and Richland. They admit taking about forty fowls from Fred Sheets and Charley Stoutner farms. Wayland man badly injured in home grinding accident
Joseph Nebel of Wayland was seriously hurt Monday at his home when his hand touched a small circular saw on a motor driven emery stone. The injury severed his hand to the bones of the index finger and he was treated by Dr. Allen and in County Hospital.
