Chautauqua begins August 11 with the comedy Adam and Eva and features speakers like Dr. William H. Beachler and Judge Springer. Other highlights include lectures on national affairs and performances by Evana Brown and LaBerte Boggs, with Jessie Rae Taylor and Dr. Lew C. Harris among the billed figures.
A Sunday morning blaze on the Arthur Reubsam farm six miles southeast of Washington destroyed two barns and a corn crib. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Kolesick and children, who woke neighbors too late to help, reported insurance covered the loss including hay, machinery, forty five chickens and about five hundred bushels of oats.
The Washington Concert Band presents a scheduled program for next Saturday evening. Nine varied selections will be performed by local musicians including operatic numbers, marches, foxtrots, and descriptive pieces. The list features Fighting Army, Lucia di Lammermoor, Cavalry Charge, Zam a bit of syncopation, La Tosca excerpts, and Transatlantic March among others.
Washington County Public Health Service summarizes July 1925 activities. Six communicable disease cases reported, one released, no deaths. Nursing logged 23 home, 9 professional, 3 welfare visits. office duties covered. plans for child welfare with Woman's Club. Laboratory processed 114 examinations. sanitation conducted 12 investigations including ice supply samples and water testing leading to two well condemnations. Welfare work covered 43 investigations, 27 families aided with food, fuel, milk, rent, or medical care. two patients committed to State University Hospital under Klaus Haskell Act. one to County Home. one to hospital for the insane. Atty. Charles Howe and wife visited, long absence noted.
The Chautauqua Association secured Dr Lew C Harris a renowned Bible lecturer and platform manager. He serves as traveling secretary for Drake University Des Moines and formerly pastored in Albia Iowa. His engaging presence and strong oratorical skill are expected to draw many friends in the community. Don't miss his morning lectures.
William Paul Moothart born April 15 1845 died Monday after years of illness. Illinois Mounted Infantry veteran wounded at Jonesboro served until 1865 and later held public office in Lena and Washington. He led veterans in song at a last meeting and was a Presbyterian longtime member. Funeral at his home proceeded to Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. R. J. Fleming died after months of suffering at her West Main Street residence on Sabbath evening August 2 1925. Born Martha Salina Patterson in New Wilmington Pennsylvania she was daughter of Rev. James Patterson D D and wife and connected with Westminster College and the United Presbyterian Church. She is survived by sister Mrs L M Lowrey and brother Dr Patterson. A private funeral was held from the home with Rev Willard Wylie officiating and Woodlawn Cemetery interment follows.
Dr. W. W. Bowers came back last week from Boulder Colorado and other locations after several weeks away. Mrs. Bowers and Mildred and Luther plan to remain there for a few more weeks.
The Rock Island Lines offer an over weekend excursion August 7 to 10 with a $5.25 round trip fare. Tickets apply to trains leaving Chicago or heading to Chicago, allowing several days in the city for shopping and sightseeing. Major league baseball games between the Chicago Cubs and Boston are mentioned as a potential activity.
Washington Blue Sox defeated North English 8 to 2 to extend their season win streak to seven in nine games. Stan Kiesey pitched seven innings, allowed no hits to reach base, and struck out ten. Kiesey led at bat with a triple and two singles, and Case added a double and a single as Washington built an early lead.
Wellman hosts Pioneer Day on August 20 with speeches by P. E. McClenahan Gov. John Hammill and Judge Howard J. Clark. Events include horseshoe pitching a horse race on Main Street a fiddlers contest a knitting contest a band concert a free act a pony show and a dance at Oak Park pavilion.
The Hagenbeck-Wallace circus comes to Washington Friday with two performances at 2 pm and 8 pm on the Boyd Aberdeen grounds. A street parade downtown before noon features the Davenport troupe and other top acts along with roaring comedy from a large clown cast. Doors open one hour before each show for animal displays and crowds fill the long trains arriving in town.

H V Ellis leaves for Sac City to continue similar work as county agent. W C Molison, new county agricultural agent, begins duties August 1, bringing Ames College training and farm experience. Molison and Ellis visit club members, praising boys clubs and noting girls clubs potential. Ellis praised for advancing poultry clubs and orchard work. Molison aims to extend the program, building on Ellis's foundation in Poweshiek County.
West Washington residents report burglaries Saturday night with homes entered after doors were left unlocked. The Weigman house yielded five dollars, a $50 watch, and two gold pens. no other loot found. Police arrested two tramps later, but no charges filed. another attempted entry at James Casey residence left only a pried window pane.
The funeral for the late F. G. Chesley was held at the M. B. Church in West Chester on Saturday August 1 1925 with Rev Coats of Washington and Rev Gray and Rev Coleman officiating Interment followed in West Chester cemetery Chesley born June 9 1844 in Canada and raised in Iowa served in Civil War including Shiloh wounded at battle of Shiloh and later in 9th Iowa Cavalry married Amanda Brawner Hayden November 2 1882 Survived by wife stepdaughter Mrs W M Weekley and son James Chesley The pallbearers included Frank McFarlane Harry Davis and others with local soldiers in attendance
An open competitive examination by the U S Civil Service Commission is announced for clerk and carrier positions in Washington Iowa. Applications close September 9 1925 and must be filed with the district secretary in St Paul Minnesota or local post office. Applicants must submit a recent photo on exam day.
Homer F Darbyshire is named manager of the Washington branch of Iowa Southern Utilities after the Ottumwa Railway Light and Power purchase expands the firm. Frank Miller will assume Darbyshire’s duties in Washington as Ke Bulmahn’s choice to lead Ottumwa operations. New Ottumwa work includes building a 66000-volt line linking Ottumwa and Newton to Des Moines.
Mrs. A. M. Turner of South Third Street died Sunday after a lengthy illness. Born December 7, 1855, Ida Snyder grew up west of Kalona and taught rural schools before marrying A. M. Turner January 11, 1876. They lived in What Cheer, Dakota, and Washington since 1893. Survived by her husband, son Cecil, his wife, and many relatives, the funeral was held from Jones and McPhinney on Wednesday at 2:30 with Rev J. D. Kern officiating and Elm Grove interment.
The Afternoon Bridge Club was entertained Thursday at Mrs. W. M. Keeley's home with a two course luncheon. Five tables were set for bridge, and the dining room and living room were decorated with ver and red flowers. Out of town guests included Mrs. Chas. Winters, Mrs. Ruth Winters Lytle of Chicago, Miss Elizabeth Bell of Spokane, and Miss Mable Buckley of Chicago.
