In Oskaloosa a brave baby fell into a thirty foot well with ten feet of water. The mother lowered a clothes line, the child clung on, and after the father and helpers arrived a chilly rescue followed. The crowd cheered as the grateful mother embraced the survivor.
A Bellevue resident W W Watkins sent a humorous letter to the Legislature of Town urging strict enforcement of the prohibitory liquor law, repeal of arms restrictions, majority rule in juries, study of women’s voting, and even self-nomination for U S senator. The epistle amused the house. Town reports in Washington include petitions on gambling bans, a foundry at Rock Island, and copyright law support.
Major Kauffman of the Cincinnati Anzeiger analyzes Germany's election, crediting Bismarck's anti socialistic law for socialist gains yet predicting a drift toward a more liberal parliamentary government. Four years passed as Garfield’s remains supposedly rested in a vault within Lake View cemetery.
