Family guidance from Plymouth County Extension Service covers calculating room paint needs. It outlines measuring perimeter, wall area, ceiling area, woodwork, and cabinets, plus two coats. It explains epoxy paints and urethanes, their costs, benefits, and water-seepage tips.
Iowa State University granted 538 scholarships to area students many freshmen or transfer students. Some will receive the first educational opportunity grants under the Higher Education act of 1965. Awards range from 100 to 1000 dollars with packaging for exceptional need.
George Vander Ting of Le Mars was one of 10 community leaders at the Plan Book 66 seminar in Sioux Falls April 28 29. Sponsored by the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce wholesale committee, the event explored growth challenges for small towns and how nearby communities have spurred development. Vander Ting contributed to the discussion and organizers hope Le Mars leaders will cooperate on a similar program to boost city growth and trade. Topics included city promotions advertising financing growth employee relations and disaster planning.
The Plymouth county unit of the Office of Economic Opportunity formed an advisory committee meeting at the extension office in Le Mars. President R. E. Hatz and director Richard Rattray attended as the Mid-Sioux Opportunity group includes Ida Cherokee Plymouth and rural Woodbury counties. Next meeting May 19 will finalize the committee roster with officer elections and program planning to reduce tax burdens in the county.
William Beaulieu, a junior at Hinton Community High School, earned a superior in algebra at the 11th annual mathematics contest hosted by the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Jack Dixon, a Hinton senior, received an honorable mention in the senior mathematics division. The event features geometry algebra and senior divisions with separate sections for large and small schools. The math team also includes Edith Van Evera Gene Saienga Craig Riediger Ruth Bornholtz Julie Hanson Norman DeRaad and Kenneth Beaulieu.
American Eagles gathered at the farm bureau with Merlin Sitzman and John Schnepf as hosts. The meeting opened with the flag pledge and roll call showing 42 members present. A planter box service is planned for the next meeting with a June 1 deadline. The club earned the Sportsmen award and each player received a 4-H pen. Ted Schnepf led a talk on Understanding a See Tag and Terry Reuter spoke on How do thistles do it. Lunch was served by Mrs Sitzman and Mrs Schnepf.

Regular monthly Union Flowerettes 4-H club meeting took place March 14 at Judy and Debbie Badgerow home. Attendees answered roll call with hair style, pledged allegiance, discussed old and new business, planned bake sale, and gave talks on hair care, sewing, and hand and nail care with demonstrations. Deborah Molitor of Onawa was selected Miss University at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion where she is a freshman.
Democrats plan pre platform hearings in Iowa May 18 to 20 at the Savery hotel Des Moines. Lex Hawkins invited groups to present views to the pre platform committee of the 1966 state convention. Each group gets 10 minutes and a written summary. 18 committee members will be named later. The committee will advise the platform committee ahead of the June 11 Des Moines convention.
