Rita Starr reports two Plymouth Electric Co-Op employees Wilbur Huff and Elmer Hoffman were honored at the Elks club with 60 attendees. The pair, both 65, received onyx rings with diamond insets and plaques at the annual meeting.
Cloudy May day begins with on again off again showers and drizzle. .55 inch moisture measured at KLEM weather station as forecasts call for 80 percent today, 70 percent tonight, and 50 percent Wednesday. Daytime temps in the 50s and nights around 40s persist. Snow piles in the Rockies and 3 inches of rain hit southern Iowa. Hail damaged a mobile home court in Indianola. Local notes include Earl B. Haack of Le Mars visiting Margaret Haack in Alton. Longtime Plymouth REC employee Karl Huff honored for 25 years service with a gold watch. he started as a lineman and retired as first class lineman. Elmer Hoffman, 16 years with the REC since January 1960, previously ran Hoff man Electric in Le Mars.
Tickets for the eighth annual Le Mars Lions pancake supper were distributed to members for the May 10 event at the KC hall downtown Le Mars. Adults pay 1.69 dollars and children 1 dollar. Proceeds benefit the Plymouth county historical museum and Lions club causes. Co-chairs Rod Scholten and Dr Wayne Faber announce serving from 4 to 8 p.m. Also note weekly Chamber coffee at the Abbey of Le Mars on Wednesday 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
The Floyd Valley hospital drive has reached 1 426 753 in pledges and contributions. Robert Straiton, chairman of the board of trustees, said donations are still coming in and calls continue in some communities. A citizens committee was formed to liaise with architects drawing up plans, including Dan Broyles Dr Glen Van Roekel Marian Kellen Francis Nemmers Mrs Marge Roseberry Dan Buckley Floyd Crow. The committee reports to the hospital board.
Iowa and nation inched toward metric adoption as the National Federation of Independent Business reports a 51 percent nationwide favor and 48 percent in Iowa. The plan envisions a voluntary 10 year conversion with costs and small-business challenges noted. Experts cite improved world trade positioning and foreign trade compatibility as key drivers.
Total federal outlay for Sioux County and its cities reaches 16,056,440 with 4,960,075 from agriculture programs. Allocations include feed grain payments, loans, school lunch, food stamps, farm services, and various HEW and defense items. A federal preliminary hearing for Fay Anderson was postponed to June 22. Le Mars Chargers softball team cancels practice tonight with next session Friday.
Iowa Public Service electric customers begin receiving refunds today as a credit on May bills. Some with recent address changes may get a check as well. Refunds cover the portion of a two year rate increase not approved by the Iowa Commerce Commission plus interest and sales tax from 1971 and 1972.
The Le Mars fire department mailed 3000 fund drive letters on Tuesday as part of its annual appeal for a new rescue unit. Fire chief Herman Becker says the current vehicle is outdated and too small for modern equipment and hospital coordination. Last year covered about half the cost. 1972 funds were banked to help raise the rest this year. The department highlights improved safety gear and new equipment purchased previously, including air packs and the civil defense aqua lungs.
Mrs William C Verna Wittkop 58 of Le Mars is reported improving at St Joseph Mercy hospital Mason City after a two car crash near Clarion Sunday afternoon. She has a shattered kneecap and fractures of both legs. Her daughter Mrs Dave Dreckman of Orange City is at the hospital with her parents. Mr Wittkop was treated for bruises and abrasions at Belmond hospital and released. The couple were returning to Le Mars from a wedding in Waterloo.
