Soil Temperature and Moisture Guide Corn Planting
Farmers should start corn planting when soil temperatures average 50 degrees or higher for several days in late April, with a favorable 5 day forecast. Kyle Peterson of Iowa State University notes soil depth four inches warms faster than air and offers a method to estimate soil temp from daily high and low air temps. Historical data from 1964 to 1967 shows rising soil temperatures alongside air temps. frost risk decreases for shallow plantings. Moisture samples from Plymouth County show top five feet moisture averages 5.7 inches, with 1964 driest and 1966 wettest springs. meadow ground holds notably less moisture than corn ground.
