Akron high school students earned top ratings at the Iowa district speech contest held Feb 24 at Remsen St. Marys. Winners advance to the state contest at Le Mars Community High School on March 17, including Brenda Utesch, Valerie Small, Richard Maynard, Monte Burdette, Kim Brodie, Roxanne Benda, Brad Vreugdenhil, and Swen Weinblom in various categories.
A speaker describes cleaning a home and cooking for others then expresses a wish to be the visitor rather than the visitee, implying a desire for social space and autonomy after hosting duties. The reflection notes exhaustion and preference shift from host to guest.
Twenty one of Le Mars Community high school entries reached the state contest after Saturday's district in Remsen St. Mary's. Top ratings went to Karen Klein, Jeanne Fertig, Mary Grady, Jolene Stratton, Chuck Cram and others. Westfield earned six firsts with Kathy Hoffman, Karen Hoffman, Elliott Waddell, and Lauri Ryan among winners. The NW district contest will be hosted by LCHS on March 17 with Roger Hallam as manager.
They're in service Sgt. Ron Harvey of Le Mars, a member of Co. A Iowa National Guard, who left February 21 for Fort Benning Georgia to attend the nine week infantry officer candidate course. Upon graduation the course qualifies students for second lieutenant. Ron is employed by Supersweet in Le Mars.
Harry C. Wingert of Remsen has been named communications supervisor for Northwestern Bell in Council Bluffs. He will oversee marketing representatives aiding business telephone service. A 1957 Remsen Consolidated School graduate, he joined Northwestern Bell in 1970 in Waterloo and later moved to his new post. He and his wife Kay have two children, Kristie aged five and Lori aged two.
