Black delegates challenge Iowa Democrats on floor action
At the 1974 Iowa Democratic state convention in Ames a clash over a one vote per person rule and black delegates’ rights emerged. The reform committee proposal was approved after debate with 30 minutes given to reverse, culminating in the election of Jim Porter to the state central committee. Candidates John Culver and Jim Schaben addressed 2,800 delegates amid broad platform debates.

Butler leads Le Mars guard unit through 1922 efforts
Capt. Clay Butler kept Co. K of the Le Mars guard unit engaged as an army reserve. In June 1922 guardsmen were vaccinated for typhoid by Dr. J. M. Fettes with three inoculations. On July 16 1922 the unit attended the funeral of Pvt Arley Boardman 19 who died of tuberculosis. the firing squad and bugler paid tribute. Butler bolstered the mess fund to improve meals and used local papers to recruit by offering pay for drill attendance.

Eighty six men reported for Camp Dodge duty in a last minute call led by Sgt. Condon. The volunteers included Capt. W. C. Butler and 1st Lt. Walter Huxtable, with dozens of privates and corporals listed by name, some later changing posts or resigning before service. Carl Witt shifts from police to post office, then to National Guard re enlistment as cook and officer.
