A commission executive argues against teaching youth to drink, citing addiction risk with one in fifteen predisposed youths. Edna Anderson and Edith Reilly, co-presidents of Hawkeye Twins club, will preside over the 12th annual Iowa Twins convention in Council Bluffs on June 21. Twins from Le Mars and Plymouth county are invited plus Siouxland Twin Club and Mothers of Twin Club members. The program features the first Miss America Twins contest for ages 16 to 22, five semi finalists, a humanitarian award, and multiple competitions for twins and triplets across age groups.
The Le Mars Community high school class of 1969 walks in Carey gymnasium to receive diplomas. Graduates face varied paths: work, college, or military service, with emphasis on respect and humility and the belief that many will still need support to pursue further education.
Iowa farmers are asked to participate in crop and livestock surveys conducted by the Iowa Crop and Livestock Reporting Service and USDA in late May and early June. Clarence F. Kasch of Hinton started interviewing farmers May 26 in Cherokee, Ida, Plymouth, and Sioux counties under state supervision. About 1,400 Iowa farms will be visited as part of a nationwide effort to estimate planted acreage crops livestock and farm labor. Data from personal interviews and mail reports will be summarized and sent to USDA in Washington for computer analysis and state crop and livestock estimates.
The public library unveils Woodall's 1969 Trailering Parks and Campgrounds and The Road Atlas from Rand McNally plus Vacation Guide. Travel Trailer Guide and Hawaii on 5 and 10 a day aid trips. Writers club gains The Beginning Writer's Handbook and related magazines. Other publications support travel and writing.
Farmers in Iowa participating in the voluntary 1969 feed grain and wheat programs must report crop acreages and land uses to county ASCS offices. State director Dale H. Awtry warns that areas too wet to plant must be subtracted and only planted acreage counted to avoid payment reductions or loss. Those prevented from planting due to a natural disaster may qualify for prevented planting credit and wheat certificate payments by filing with their local ASCS office.
SP4 Thomas Calkins and SP Calkins return from Vietnam duty with a 30 day leave and plan to reenlist for another year. Their brothers SP6 Dean L. Calkins, two years in Korea and Okinawa, and Sgt Terrence Calkins at Fort Polk also serve. SP5 Dean A.
