Rural Hinton residents suffered heavy livestock losses in an early morning blaze at a farm one and a half miles west and north of Hinton. Mrs. Newberg blamed faulty wiring as the cause while noting rain and dense fog during the event. The Merrill fire department responded to the scene. Nearby buildings may have been saved by rain.

Money order theft case ties Ashby man to federal charges
A 47-year-old Ashby, Minnesota man, Lawrence Robert Koefod, already facing an OMVAS charge in Plymouth County, was arrested in Springfield, Missouri, on a federal money order theft count. Authorities say about 400 money orders from a Springfield post office are missing. He previously cashed a stolen money order in Le Mars and left behind a 1963 Ambassador car and belongings. Meanwhile Le Mars City Council plans a regular meeting at 8 p.m. with executive session at 7 p.m. and bids opening for annual city supplies on the agenda. Earlier, pool officials canceled tonight’s swimming lessons due to holidays and repairs.

Grizzly December Snow Hits Le Mars Area Weekend
A winter storm dropped 6 percent inches of snow in Le Mars and nearby areas from Saturday into Sunday with blowing snow and hazardous roads. Friday brought .67 inches of rain before the snow, causing cancellations for Saturday night events. Sunday cleared to sunshine with a high around 20 and a low near 7, followed by cold New Year temperatures and a warming trend expected midweek.

Olson farm hog house fire claims hay and pigs
At 12 09 a m Sunday Le Mars firefighters battled a hog house blaze at the J J Killens farm three miles south and three quarters west of the Le Mars football field. Tenants Mr and Mrs Clifford Olson reported the fire after a neighbor alerted the Pratts nearby. The hog house contained four sows with litters and 2000 bales of hay and some straw stored in the loft were lost. Faulty wiring is listed as the cause as wind carried sparks in the zero degree night.
