Gov Hughes Poised To Use Appointments For Political Gain

Governor Hughes holds the upper hand as he plans major appointments during the coming session. With a split legislature and a Republican minority in the Senate, bipartisan rules require broad support for board seats, giving Hughes leverage to place Republicans who will align with his program and secure confirmations.

Kingsley School Center Named for Engineering Aptitude Test

National engineering aptitude search tests will be held at 26 Iowa centers in February. Marvin Gould, ISU mechanical engineering professor and JETS coordinator, announced Kingsley Community High School and Hawarden Community High School as testing centers. Students in grades 9–12 must apply by January 4. The program seeks to gauge aptitudes for college level engineering and is run with school counselors. Tests take about three hours and cost $2.50 per student. Applications available at centers or from Gould, Iowa State University, Ames.

Service family plans after navy discharge

Fredric Thunhorst will be discharged from the navy on June 1 with his enlistment ending March 1. Mrs Thunhorst teaches in Sanford Florida and will remain until the term ends. Fredric will remain in the navy for additional service and both plan to pursue college studies at the university after returning home to St Paul.

Iowa Civil Defense to be Reorganized Under Miller Plan

Iowa Adjutant General J M Miller proposes major overhaul of the civil defense department. The 1965 law placed civil defense under his office and Gov Hughes refused to appoint Ray Stiles, who has served without appointment. Miller proposes six new positions and a director to lead operations with the adjutant general’s office in command. He seeks legislative approval and funds with federal matching support to improve state responsiveness and professional staffing.

The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union holds its annual Christmas party Thursday at 2 p.m. at J. B. Haddock’s home. A gift exchange with a one dollar value is planned.

Funeral Rites for Mrs. John De Vries 87 in Hawarden

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Matthew Lutheran in Chatsworth for Mrs. Jennie De Vries 87 who died Sunday in Hawarden nursing home. Rev. Harris Hostager will officiate with burial at Grace Hill. A prayer service is set for 8 p.m. Wednesday at Barnard-Dow. Survivors include two daughters, six sons, 27 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren.
