Mrs. John Kennedy killed herself Christmas evening at her Remsen home and will be buried in Iowa City. A rosary service is planned in Remsen at 8 p.m. The deceased, born February 23 1919 in Sioux City, leaves her husband and mother, plus two brothers and a sister. Sheriff Scholer and Deputy Ho Luken investigated, noting an attempt to cut wrists and throat.
Court House activities edge back to normal as the Board of Supervisors meets for year end business and machinery work. The treasurer’s office remains quiet with prep underway for collecting the first half 1959 taxes. A mood of universal satisfaction with Christmas celebrations prevails.
Bill Johnson, operator of the Golden Slipper dance hall and tavern at Brunsville for 14 years, announced the sale of the business to Brunsville Legion post No. 24. The site will become effective Tuesday and the venue will be renamed the Brunsville Legion hall. A public dance is planned at the Legion hall on New Year’s Eve.
Keith Renken, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Renken of Le Miurs, earned a Master of Science degree in accounting from the University of Arizona. The degree was conferred this spring, marking a milestone in Renken’s academic career.
Courtesy of Akron hospital Auxiliary, a weekly admissions and dismissals list notes Dec 16 to 22. Names include Antionette Baum, Ronald Marshall, Herbert Frerichs, and others from Akron Elk Point and Le Mars. A birth is recorded for Dec 17 to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rollins of Akron.
The Le Mars Lassies 4-H club met at Mary Beth Cox’s home on December 14 with nine members attending. Vice president Molly Gunther presided as Fran Ketelsen gave a gift wrapping demonstration. Members made angel figures for tree ornaments decorations or package trim. Mary Beth Cox and her mother served refreshments. Mary Fran Ketelsen historian.
Le Mars High hosts the second annual Student Colloquium at 10 a.m. Wednesday December 30 in the Central High student lounge. Former graduates are invited, all Central High graduates may attend. The event seeks to identify strong and weak points of the high school from the college student viewpoint to improve preparation for college-bound students.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Vance hosted a buffet supper at their home Tuesday evening. Guests enjoyed visiting during the informal social gathering.
Arthur Stall 76 a former Elgin township farmer died Monday at Balaton Minnesota after a long illness Funeral services will be at 11 am Saturday at St Peters Lutheran church Balaton and at 2 pm at St John Lutheran church southeast of Treton Burial will be in the Reading township cemetery Sioux County He farmed in Plymouth County before moving to Sibley in 1924 He had resided on a farm near Balaton since 1941 Survivors include his wife Amelia John of Maurice a daughter Mrs Lawrence Wittrock and five grandchildren all of Sioux Falls
Army Pvt. Tarry N Kalas 23 son of Dr and Mrs Harry F Kalas Le Mars completed eight weeks of advanced individual heavy weapons training December 12 at Fort Riley Kansas Kalas entered the Army last July and completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri He is a 1954 Napemalte HL Community High School 1959 State University of Iowa graduate and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
School officials report increased thematic requirements for students and updated math and science programs. An informal coffee session will open the morning program with comments from Superintendent Archambault and Principal Aspicion on curricular changes and proposals. A general discussion with former students will follow to gather recommendations. For attendance, call the superintendent or principal. Capitol Notes announces Ray Venter as Iowa deputy state auditor succeeding Ed J. Kallemyn. Venter previously led state insurance and wartime and Korean war bonus boards. The Interstate Commerce Commission allowed the Milwaukee Road to discontinue two passenger trains named the Ligux between Madison, Wis and Canton, SoD. Holiday service westbound from Madison will continue through Jan with reduced stops and eastbound service from Canton continues to Jan 5. The routes pass through Algona, Spencer, Mason City, Calmar, Clear Lake, Sheldon, Rock Valley, McGregor, New Hampton, Charles City, Nora Springs, Gurner and Emmetsburg.
