The meeting adjourned after a closing prayer following a motion by Vander Meer and a second by Jolene Harpeneau.
Gehlen High School students held their annual Christmas program on Sunday evening in the school auditorium. The junior band performed Christmas selections led by Joe Brice, followed by the senior band under Bill Rischling. A cantata with nativity and other scenes featured chorus accompaniment by Miss Trudy Hischman and piano. Songs included Silent Night Angels We Have Heard On High Hark The Herald Angels Sing We Three Kings Of Orient Are Adeste Fidelis Joy To The World and The Glory of the Lord from Handel's Messiah.
Picture taking day at Gehlen featured Mr. Nichols of the THE ROSARIAN printer on hand to photograph seniors across classrooms. Football basketball and cheerleader shots were included as part of the yearbook sequence. The hectic session ended with students relieved once all pictures were completed.
Gehlen freshmen defeated Salix varsity 44 to 28 as Red Wiltgen led the Jr. Jays early. Halftime stood 30 to 9 with Gehlen ahead. Salix outscored Gehlen 10 to 7 in the second half but could not overturn the deficit. B-game also won 17 to 13. Jr. Jays now 2–2.
Gehlen Christens win sixth on home floor as Don Druckman leads with 17 points and Kallmer tops with 19. Jays trailed 20 19 at half, used full court press in third quarter to pull away, final score 56 47. B team also won 39 24 led by Don Neubrand with 15.
The annual faculty dinner occurred December 18 at 6 30 p m in the Gehlen Cafeteria. Attendees included clergy from Saint Joseph and Saint James, Gehlen School staff, lay faculty from Gehlen Grade and High School, and spouses. A turkey and roast lamb dinner was served by the Gehlen cafeteria staff, Santa distributed gifts, and all joined in Christmas carols.
Gehlen students gather food for seven Christmas baskets for needy families. A list on homeroom blackboards urged signups of soup vegetables coffee milk bread fruit and nuts. The Spiritual Committee organized the drive and thanks are extended to the student body for cooperation.
Poem lines express a Christmas wish of joy for you through candlelight wreaths carols and children's laughter. It links holiday gifts and scents to contemplation of the shepherds angels and the Star with Wise Men bearing frankincense gold and myrrh and rebirth in the Christ Child.
Congratulations to the Jays on their victory over Storm Lake and Saint Mary's last Friday night. Alumni of Gehlen are invited to an Alumni Dance sponsored by the seniors in the Gehlen gym on Friday December 27.
Vacation ends with students returning January 5 in good shape for the new term. Home Economics class showcased cookies and samples that impressed. Congratulations to Gehlen band and chorus, seniors, and all who helped with the Christmas pageant last Sunday.
In Mr Garber's shop class students work on varied crafts for the annual May display. Mike Lovely and Bill Singer overhaul a 1922 Ford truck while Jerry Kelly and others revamp a fishing and camping trailer. Larry Woll begins lathe work and others build beds bookcases and chests.
Upcoming events list shows an Alumni Dance on December 27 1958 and basketball games at Granville Akron Hawarden and Gehlen Aire through January 1958. Also notes January 5 resume of classes and a Dop Show on January 9 1958.
