A devotional look at Christmas around the world. It contrasts secular celebrations with the religious meaning, urging readers to center their holiday on Christ. It notes customs in Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain and more, and warns against materialism dousing the spiritual message.
In three days Santa will descend chimneys delivering toys to good children. The custom spreads across homes, rich or poor, with stockings and family gifts. The piece notes Santa’s Dutch roots in St. Nicholas and how the feast day faded from memory.
The sophomore Y.C.S. organized and distributed baskets of fruit vegetables soups candy dairy products and other items to benefit needy families in Le Mars. A collection was taken to buy meat and the baskets were delivered through the office to those in need.
The Christmas Ball moves from December 26 to January 1 to allow faculty to enjoy Christmas vacation. Sponsored by Gehlen Junior Class, it welcomes students and alumni from area schools. Bob Conley and his band perform from 8 30 to 11 30 with five album door prizes.
The senior class comments on a corrupt president amid the senior circle. Chanticleer Paul from Partlet Rose Ann cries go away bad dream. The band room hosts jam sessions while Christmas crib decorations brighten the entry. Chorus seniors stay ever-ready and Peggy earns applause for Seven Wonders. Tickets for the Holiday Ball are available from Juniors or at the door.
This week the Juniors listed Christmas requests in strict confidence for Santa Claus. Rosalie Allison asks for a boat, Mary Ann Cradit for an alarm clock, Francy Gengler for his problem back, Karen Harpenau for a wig, Arnie Harms for car parts, John Kamp a tail light, and Lynda Kohler a machine for punishments.
A Town State Health Department advisory cautions parents about hazards from holiday decorations and toys. It highlights bubbling tree lights, spray snow adhesives, flammable colors, berries, mistletoe, moth balls, and other risks. The guidance urges outdoor or well ventilated tree decoration, supervision, and consulting a doctor if concerns arise.
Coralene Schieuer of Kingsley married Larry J. Arkfeld of Sioux City in a Nov 23 ceremony at St Michael Catholic Church Kingsley. Rev Raymond Weiling officiated with music by the church choir and organist Mrs James Berens. Maid of honor Margaret Schieuer with bridesmaids Patricia Schieuer Judith Petorf and Patricia Huebner wore green and gold taffeta. They carried autumn mums. The bride wore a floor length taffeta gown with white alencon lace, long sleeves, portrait neckline and V bodice. Veil was fingertip with a tiara. Flower girls Jane and Jeanne Arkfeld. ring bearer Kenny Schieuer. Richard Wessling attended.
The bride, a 1962 Kingsley Pierson graduate, works at Blue Cross in Sioux City. The groom, a 1961 Central High alum, is employed at Swifts. Attendants include Ronald and Thomas Arkfeld Jr., brothers of the groom, and Ron ald Schiever, a brother of the bride. The couple resides at 16154 Pierce St. Sioux City.
A collection of handwritten notes to Santa from several children. Jayne Hodgson requests Tiny Tears, nanies, Barbie doll and suitcase aged eight. Karen Hodgson asks for Barbie doll, suitcase, roller skates and dishes aged five. Anthony, three, wants a cowboy outfit guns and a fire engine. Terry Cook from Le Mars mentions a Boat Truck a Boat and a Sketch A Graph and Tam six years old signs off.
Tony Kettler of Le Mars asks Santa for a Jimmy Jet, wooden roller skates, bullets for a toy gun, and snow tires for a Plymouth in a festive year end request.
