The 62nd Iowa General Assembly may open with legislative fireworks as leaders push eight constitutional amendments. Proposals range from governor and lieutenant governor as a team to four year terms, veto powers, and home rule for cities. Reapportionment to 100 House members and 50 Senate members is also on the agenda, with committee structures likely similar to 1965.
State Senator Stanley of Muscatine plans to push open meetings and public records access. The Iowa Highway Commission may name a new chief engineer soon with candidates including Gunnerson Schach McLean Snyder and Given following the retirement of L M Clausen after six years in the post.
A Knoxville artist received the 1966 Easter seal award for gallantry from the Iowa Society for Crippled Children and Adults at Camp Sunnyside Des Moines. Charles Lee Smith an ex coal miner paralyzed from an auto accident uses a ball point pen between his teeth to paint creating a tapestry of thousands of tiny pen marks. Robert Arnold Des Moines was elected president. Danny Creger six 7 year old son named Easter seal child for Iowa.
A November update lists multiple motorists from Le Mars Sioux City and surrounding towns facing fines and costs in Justice of the Peace Bob Utechs court. A Lake City Graphic item reports that last Saturday night a group of teenagers conducted an informal study on juvenile delinquency by dialing thirteen area homes to ask where the parents were. Seven calls were answered by youths who did not know their own parents' whereabouts.
The Plymouth County Association for Retarded Children met December 12 at Le Mars Community High School cafeteria for a potluck dinner and Christmas party. Families attended as Barbara Dreckman and Vickie Rolfes led carols with Becky Murphy and Cheryl Freking, and Paul Freking read "'Twas The Night Before Christmas." A panotrated skit, "Hunters Lament," featured Ann Freking and others. Santa distributed gifts. J. F. Kissinger, president, reported on the fund drive. Next meeting set for January 18.
Four people were injured in a U S 75 crash near James north of Sioux City. Donald Mouw 45 and his wife were hospitalized with chest neck and back injuries while their two children Kathleen 13 and Laurel 8 were treated and released. State Patrol linked the collision to a truck driven by William Michelsen 65 who escaped injury.
