Iowa lawmakers hear on campaign funds at state commerce panel

The legislative committee probing the state commerce commission heard Edgar Storey testify that his office was used as a clearing house for campaign contributions for U.S. Senator Harold Hughes and former state treasurer Paul Franzenburg. Franzenburg recalled Storey asking whether to accept funds and to forward them to his finance committee. Storey’s health cut his appearance short. he served at the commission from 1965 to last summer. Hughes later won the Senate seat after earlier gubernatorial campaigns. Franzenburg ran for governor in 1968 but was unsuccessful.
