Eugene F Carey: teacher coach builder of Le Mars fame
In 1926 a South Dakota electrical engineering graduate and WWI Navy veteran joined Le Mars High School as mathematics teacher and head athletic coach. Over 36 years he led major sports 28 years as head basketball coach, retiring in 1962 with a record few can match in Iowa. At 42 years in Le Mars he remains active, and this week he was inducted into the Iowa football coaches association hall of fame at Ames.

Navy pilot trainee earns first helicopter solo flight
Marine 2nd Lt. Stanley W. Jorgensen, 24, son of Mrs. Etta Steimetz of Kingsley, completed his first helicopter solo at Pensacola Naval Air Station after ground training in rotary wing principles with Helicopter Training Squadron Eight. He will receive further flight instruction in Navy Bell and Sikorsky helicopters before wings of gold are awarded. The VA contact office at the Sioux City post office will open Monday December 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday December 17 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to assist veterans and dependents.
