Fire Control Technician Third Class Richard A. Schultz USN son of Mr and Mrs Carl L Schultz of route 4 Le Mars participated in Blue Lotus the largest US First Fleet Exercise in three years aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Long Beach. The exercise off the coast of Southern California ran Nov 28 to Dec 9 involved 24 000 men in 45 ships and six air units. The strike force phase involved 24 000 men in 45 ships. The amphibious phase included an actual assault at Camp Pendleton by an embarked marine expeditionary brigade.
