Disparity Between Iowa Murders and Prison Convictions

Iowa State University sociologist Walter A. Lunden finds a wide gap since 1953 between murders and murder convictions leading to prison. From 1953 to 1967 Iowa had 516 murders while 284 offenders were imprisoned for murder or manslaughter, 54 per 100 murders. Urban counties account for 63 percent of deaths, with 11 counties containing 40 percent of Iowa’s population, and rural counties 23. The study notes rising murder rates outpacing imprisonments and questions whether convictions have weakened or courts loosened.
