Herb Phillips family wins prizes in Sioux City bike race
Herb Phillips route 3 Le Mars and his children Tim 18 and Joan 20 competed in a 50 mile race sponsored by a Sioux City station and merchants. Tim finished 40th, Mr Phillips 49th, Joan 51st as first girl finisher with a $20 bike shop prize. Tim also won a other prize. a drawing awarded two 10 speed bikes to Tim. Vance Phillip 17 Akron placed 10th. Prizes ranged 100 for first, 75 for second, 25 each for third and fourth. Tim to attend Augustana College.

Le Mars city engineer Elmer Nemmers said two railroad crossings will be repaired starting next week. Ist Street north near the ticket depot will close to traffic from Tuesday morning Sept 4 through Saturday. The week of Sept 10 the 6th Street north crossing will close for similar work with new grade and ties to smooth the crossings.

Le Mars Grads Spend A Month Touring Brazil In 1971
Three Le Mars Community High School graduates from the class of 1971 spent June 11 to July 9 touring Brazil visiting former classmates and hosts in Vitoria Peres de Oliveira Recife Salvador Piracicaba and Rio de Janeiro. They traveled about 2000 miles by bus costing each about 900 dollars including airfare and hotels for six nights. They earned funds through work and loans with Ruth a ISU junior Diane an ISU junior and Carol a Westmar sophomore. The trip priced at roughly 900 dollars per person with 700 for U S. airfare and 200 for lodging and souvenirs.

Drefke steer top state fair prize with highest cutability
Diana Drefke’s grand champion steer at the Iowa State Fair earned the 1.00 cutability rating the highest yet seen among state grand champions. The crossbred steer weighed 1,100 pounds live with a 65.27 percent dressing and 718 pounds carcass, showing a 14.3 square inch loin eye and .25 inches back fat. Dr. Ed Kline of Iowa State University assessed the carcass noting strong muscularity but slightly light marbling. The steer also won Plymouth county fair honors, while Diana received 2,776.95 dollars for the animal plus 1,000 dollars from the American International Charolais Assn. The event included admissions and hospital notices for local residents and a postponed Plymouth county fall hog show due to transport logistic issues.

Underground cable work advances in Le Mars district
Central Telephone Co is finishing its underground cable program in the Le Mars area under Julius Hop. Shetland Construction crews crossed the Floyd River on highway 3 west of Le Mars, moving equipment to the river’s west side. A tractor on the east bank pulled the cable across, aided by another tractor on the west side.

Enrollment Decline Hits Le Mars Community and Gehlen
Le Mars Community and Gehlen schools report falling enrollment as the new term opens. First day counts show 2,569 pupils in Le Mars, with 1,261 elementary, 649 high, 659 junior high, and a 127 pupil net drop from the prior year across all grades. Gehlen lists 620 total. high school 231 and grades 389, down from last year.
