The Daily Sentinel wraps up a 63 page hospital report prepared by consultants detailing Le Mars involvement in state hospital modernization plans and capital cost guidance for a new facility. The 1964 Hill Harris Amendments broaden health facility surveys and align with Medicare rules, driving major revisions in 1966 Iowa Plan. Grants fund modernization and new construction for long-term care and general facilities, with unified bed capacity standards and five-year population projections guiding area needs in Le Mars within Plymouth County.
The area plan ranks Area No 34 fifteenth of eighty six for general facilities with 9.8 percent of need met. It targets modernizing 55 beds with B priority and notes 49 existing long term care beds in the area. Le Mars houses 23 nonconforming beds and Akron 26 beds with six nonconforming. To meet the programed total of 71 beds, 22 beds will be added and 23 at Le Mars will be modernized, with six beds modernized at Akron.
Area priority shows 16th B for 22 new beds with 28.2 percent of need met. Appendix lists 40 bed hospital and 40 bed extended care unit costs. The area has 79 beds, 6 conforming, 73 nonconforming, with 61 beds unmet. Rotary speakers discuss Sacred Heart hospital's future and modernization efforts.
