Des Moines VA adjudication officer C. E. McCutcheon warned retired disabled veterans who have not filed VA disability claims they may be missing money. Veterans may elect the greater of retirement or disability benefits, retain VA claims, and access dependents benefits if rated 50 percent or more. If retirement is chosen, future hospitalizations could reopen for higher ratings, and filing early speeds benefits.
