A hospital report by Herman Smith Chicago consultants warns that further doctor decline would harm the facility. Local residents urge attracting physicians before expanding care. Le Mars doctors express willingness to welcome younger physicians as public meetings discuss the issue.
The Sacred Heart Hospital medical staff averages 56.2 years with only three under 50. Active staff includes 12 physicians, two general practitioners on the honorary staff, and one general surgeon. The AMA notes Plymouth County has 11 general practitioners and one general surgeon. Rural areas face doctor shortages due to retirements, limited demand for specialists, and the need for proactive recruitment and incentives to maintain hospital services. Senior physicians account for most hospital admissions.
Two separate crashes near Ham mer's restaurant on highway 75 south damaged four vehicles last Friday. In the 5 10 p m collision a northbound pickup driven by Reimann Mayer 69 of Spirit Lake hit a southbound car driven by Virgil Schiefen 23 of Le Mars. A second similar crash at 9 20 p m involved Robert Hearing 40 of Derby Kansas turning into the driveway and striking Lawrence Parish 40 of Sioux City. Parish sustained 125 damage to a 1961 Chevrolet while Hearing's car suffered 100 damage to the rear.
Mrs. Irene Koob entered Sacred Heart hospital Sunday for surgery Monday morning. Mr. and Mrs. George Hartman and sons of Reseda California were guests at the home of his aunt Mr. and Mrs. Henry Moos midweek. Mr. and Mrs. Al Fischer and family, after visiting in the Nitchel home, spent the weekend with her sister Mrs. Jerome Jungers before returning home.
Commissioner Gene L Needles announced that the Department of Public Safety revised its driver improvement policy to focus on education rather than mass suspensions. Under the new rules suspensions follow a first hand highway patrol investigation, with a minimum 30 days for unusually serious offenses and speeding over 20 mph above limit exempt from serious violation reporting. The change aligns with Governor Hughes reverence for life month and aims to reduce accidents. Prize winners at Walker's Skelly get acquainted day were Margaret Peters first prize with 100 gallons of gasoline, Mary Mueller second, Albert Boysen third, and Joann Engle won a transistor radio in children’s registration. Mark Hinners, Lake City, won three trophies in a Calhoun county 4H horse and pony show with his two year old pony.
