A reader shares a long personal note on growing cabbage and making sauerkraut. The piece includes a tested department of agriculture recipe yielding 16 to 18 quarts, using 50 pounds of cabbage and salt to season before packing.
Pack chopped cabbage with brine into a crock and press firmly until juice covers. Repeat layering to within 3 to 4 inches of top, cover with cloth and weight a plate to keep brine at top. Ferment 6 weeks at 68 to 72 degrees, remove any spoiled surface, then heat and can in sterilized jars with 15 minutes for pints and 20 minutes for quarts.
Mr and Mrs Jerry Wurth of Le Mars announce the birth of a son weighing 7 pounds 2.02 ounces on August 4 at Floyd Valley hospital. The baby is named Todd Michael and has a brother Troy. Grandparents are Tillie Wurth of Remsen and Bud and Mrs Snyder, with Clara Bird as great-grandmother.
Gene Hentges of 215 Plymouth St NE phoned about a photo of the old Le Mars depot that burned in 1878. The gingerbread structure replaced by a cracker mill is shown on a post card marked Property of the Nicholas Hentges family. The 1869-built depot confirms railroad presence at Le Mars' founding.
In a mail bag note Tom Olson of Corte Madera California thanks Le Mars residents for hospitality during a visit to the cemetery and expresses joy at the kindness shown. He recalls fond memories of Doc and Mayme Joynt and praises the town’s friendly spirit and “city with a heart.”

Frieda Barnett and Marie Brooks of South Sioux City Nebraska visited their sister Mrs. Mary Hartmann on Wednesday.
