Don Oakley and S. C. Patterson of the National Foundation of Consumer Credit warn that lack of budgeting and credit education leads to heavy debt. They cite $500 million in losses and 192,000 bankruptcies last year, driven by mainly middle class families with median incomes around $500 monthly and about $3,000 in debt. The foundation now supplies high school texts and plans courses for junior high, college, and adult education to curb overindebtedness.
