Special Correspondent reports Mrs Ernest Schemmel trip to Heron Lake Minnesota for a weekend. many locals visit relatives, attend church events, and travel to nearby towns. Storm damage seen near Walthill and Winnebago. Varying health updates and upcoming community activities including W H M S meeting and Merrill dance club season start.
Matt Crowley of Dubuque visited LeMars for several weeks with relatives. Mary E Hughes W J Coffland Alvina Dunn and others traveled to Humboldt and Fedora visiting Mrs. Arnor. The group returned home by Monday amid sickness news of Hannah Crowley and a medical operation for Clarence Cowan in Sioux City. Francis J Keenan and Dorothy Gibbons visitations noted.
Merrill Ray Bristo and family visit the Fletcher home and Henry Bristo home earlier in the week. Others from Merrill tour Walthill to see tornado wreckage from last Thursday. Several locals join trips to Anthon Vermillion Rockford and Wisconsin, with arrangements to return to Sioux City and Chicago for various family and study matters.
Local notes report a cyclone three miles northwest of town damaging the Josh Ehlers place with all buildings wrecked except the house and many broken windows. The Coon and Croon properties also suffered heavy damage as the storm moved north to Ireton, Marion South Dakota, and surrounding areas. Several residents traveled or visited relatives in South Dakota and Nebraska while others headed to Massachusetts for visits, medical care, or family matters.
Oyness Mr and Mrs Joe Junkers and family of Remsen visited the Beard home Sunday. Mr and Mrs Nick Reistoffer and Mrs George Lucey returned from Washville Kansas. Mr and Mrs Axel Peterson were at Audubon Iowa last week to visit Mrs Petersens sister. Mr and Mrs Leo Rolling and son visited friends in Adrian Minnesota Sunday evening cars were involved in a crash.
Reported among readers is a traffic accident on No. 5 near LeMars involving Jack Hentges of Oyens and Willard Justius of Aurelia. Mrs. Anna Hentges, a car occupant, was seriously hurt by broken glass and remained in Sacred Heart hospital in stable condition.
Iowa State College soils specialist J L Boatman warns that visual assessment cannot reliably show fertilizer impact on corn yields. After years with the state experiment station, he notes differences of about 15 bushels per acre are needed to detect effects without weighing harvests.
Farmers and county agents harvest fertilizer test plots in corn to determine true yields. State experiment stations note potential gains from phosphate fertilizers in higher quality grain and earlier maturity, but only accurate weighing after harvest shows the real benefit or lack thereof. Mr. Boatman urges precise harvesting and weighing to tell the true story.
Wheat scab or stinking smut infection in Iowa increases, linked to late seeding to dodge Hessian fly. Extension pathologist R H Porter advises two controls: fan grain thoroughly before sowing to remove smut balls and light kernels, then treat the fanned grain with copper carbonate at 2–3 ounces per bushel depending on copper content.
A homemade seed treatment mixer is effective for reducing seedling blight. Iowa State College Extension Service in Ames will provide blueprints at 5 cents per print.
J G Edson of Casey notes cows produce about four pounds less milk when the usual milker is away. As soon as the regular handlers return, milk flow returns to normal. Ben Rummell, Hawarden blacksmith aged 71, accepts a challenge from James F. Harker of Merrill to outwork each other in pounding a plowshare or shoeing a horse. Harker, three years younger, issued the public dare via the Sioux City Journal, promising a rare, age‑matched display of skill and speed.
The article contrasts a Hawarden blacksmith with 57 years of service to a Merrill man with 46. Rummel began apprenticing in Alden Town in 1871 at 13, later spending 40 years in Hawarden. He has been active in public life, serving as mayor for one term, on the board of education, and currently on the city council after many years as a council member.
