A large stock barn on Mrs J VanVoorst farm 244 miles west of Ireton burned Sunday afternoon. Spontaneous combustion in the hay barn portion caused the blaze discovered about 5 p m. Loss includes 50 tons hay two spring calves harness grain and other farm equipment estimated at 2000 with some insurance. The bull in a box stall escaped with minor burns and Ireton fire department saved nearby hay stacks and aided truckers who moved 200 bushels of oats and grain.
Joe Brooks of Arlington South Carolina has been named manager of the Council Oak store succeeding Bob Kerns. Brooks is married with one son Terry age five. The family will move here next week to an apartment owned by John Hart. Brooks has managed the Arlington store since it opened about one and a half years ago. He has been with Council Oak for six years and spent five years at the Onawa store before transferring to Arlington.
Dr Glenn Rost and wife Mrs Rost, long serving as missionaries in Syria, returned to the United States via South Africa and South America after a secretive English troop ship voyage of about 25 000 miles. Rost, a 1928 Western Union College graduate from Red Oak Iowa, and Mrs Rost, a 1933 graduate, visited friends in LeMars while in town.
Central College grid team will visit LeMars on Friday evening for the first game. Coach Crayne promises strong competition for the visitors. Last year Central led by one touchdown. The game is set for 8 o clock at Memorial Field with new poles and improved lighting.
Plymouth county cattle were among the top sellers on Monday at the Chicago stockyards. H Muecke, a well known feeder from near Hinton, sent 89 Hereford steers that brought 12.60 dollars per cwt, within 15 cents of the day’s top. The steers weighed about 1240 pounds each.
Faculty hosted a well attended reception last Monday at the college church with decorated parlors and ample space. Students circulated, were entertained by peers, and Glenn Knosp of Gallaway Neb sang “The Twenty third Psalm” and then performed “When I Think Upon the.”
About 200 guests attended a reception as first year students increased to 107. New arrivals include Lois Hepner Baldwin Kansas Samuel Ritter Rudyard Montana and Phyllis Dahmes Clemens Minnesota. A large Kansas student delegation organized at Western Union College with Miss Clarice Reep elected president Chester Swig vice president and Mildred Bauer secretary and news reporter.
Brunsville, special correspondent, lists residents and visitors to and from Sioux Falls, Des Moines, Lincoln, and Omaha. Families like Reese, Dickman, Harms, Ruble, Dirks, Niell, and Luken host and travel for weddings, anniversaries, and religious events while others tour, attend celebrations, and remodel St Peter’s Lutheran church.
Melbourne area residents are noted visiting relatives in Waterloo and LeMars with several local events. Deaths include Mrs Henry Schindel and Mrs Bollmeyer with sympathy extended to families. 4-H club members from the Melbourne area win ribbons at LeMars show. Sheldon and Van Peursem families are active in fairs and livestock shows.
Mr and Mrs Albert Conrad hosted callers in the community on Tuesday. Their son Marvin plans to attend Western Union College. Neal Brinken and relatives welcomed two nieces from Pipestone, while Ernietta and Jeanette Slagter visited. School dismissed Friday Sept 12 for Merrill pony show and parade. Albert Campbell returned home after weeks with relatives in Sioux City. Mrs Dwight Spies visiting her parents in Eddyville Neb. Weekend guests at Ernest Campbell home were Hans Neilson and family of Pipestone Minn.
Sunday visitors to the W M Sloan home and several church activities are listed along with travel updates. Residents move to Sioux Falls and Grand Rapids, visits to Hull and Hawarden noted. Local commutes include Spencer fair attendance and a funeral in Becatonica. The Ireton women’s kittenball team played Akron, and soldiers and students are mentioned in connection with Des Moines and Wichita Falls assignments.
Marienau of Brunsville visited Fred Marienau at his home Sunday. Helen Greigg attended Hawarden callers Saturday. Leland Hemmingson, at business school in Sioux City, spent weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hemmingson. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were Hawarden callers Sunday. Miss Elen White of Sheldon visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin White, Sunday. John Donavon, employed near Sioux Center, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Donavon, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Winkleman and children drove to Primghar Sunday to visit friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Morey Black and Mrs. Olive Poll visited Emerson, Nebraska, Sunday to see relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stewart and their son Malcolm of Portland, Maine, were guests of Mrs. D. R. Stewart Sunday and Monday en route to Milwaukee for the American Legion national convention. Stewart, once with the Ireton folks after World War, works in a large newsprint mill claiming tripled output and denying newsprint shortages. Visitors left Monday, followed by a missionary tea hosted by Mrs. Arthur Meyers with neighbors and friends Friday afternoon for social visiting and needlework. Mr. and Mrs. M. O. Simons then left Sunday for Chicago. they will join another couple and tour the western states over the next three weeks.
