The LeMars Globe-Post, described as the leading city and county paper, declares second class matter status at the LeMars post office under the act of March 1 1878. Editor R. F. Starzl signs the masthead with term paid in advance at $2.00 per year.
Fragment discusses Roosevelt and Wilson, accusing Roosevelt of pushing the U S into war without congressional consent. It contrasts perceived naivety among Wilson supporters with fear of Roosevelt moving toward total war, urging voters to oppose Roosevelt and New Dealers.
Ervan Bud Masuen recovers at Sacred Heart hospital after a press room accident in the Globe-Post basement. He sustained injuries to his right foot during the incident reported in the pressroom area on Thursday.
Masuen, a part time Globe-Post employee and Western Union college architecture student, suffered three toes crushed when a press crank moved and mangled his toes. Dr C V Bowers notes toes unlikely to regain normal service. He was taken to hospital for treatment and may stay another week.
Frank Murraine of Fremont Nebraska and a former LeMars resident died there Saturday afternoon after a stroke. He was 53. Funeral services are set for Tuesday morning with burial at Mt Calva Cemetery in Sioux City at 11 30. American Legion firing squad to attend graveside. Surviving are his wife and two daughters. Murraine had been in the clothing business in LeMars about twenty years ago and was a member of the American Legion.
The Plymouth county women’s home project for the year will open Thursday September 18 at Sunnyside school with an afternoon meeting inviting every homemaker in the country. Tentative schedule for similar meetings follows with Plymouth and Hunger on October 3, Liberty on October 7, Preston and Johnson on October 8, Fredonia and Mar Hon.
On October 9 a union of rural and town homemakers and town women’s groups will hold an open meeting at 8 p.m. Mrs Lois K Hughes will discuss yearly food needs and wax vegetables for storage. Demonstrations cover pit cave basement storage and green tomatoes ripening in the home, canning odds ends for soups, fall garden prep for spring yield, and a new Music of the Soil project to run in every meeting.
Albert Muxlow former Le Mars resident of Plymouth county for fifty years died Friday at his Des Moines home age 81. Funeral Sunday at First Methodist Church with Rev. W. M. Hubbard officiating. Interment in city cemetery. Funeral arrangements by Mauer's. Born May 28 1860 in Shulsburg Wisconsin. Retired to LeMars in 1900. Married Isabel Row in 1881 who preceded him in death in 1922. Survived by nieces and nephews and several relatives from Des Moines South Dakota and Minnesota attended. Uncle of John Anderson of LeMars.
Emory Collins repeats his success at the Spencer fair sweepstakes race in LeMars, earning top honors as the foremost racing citizen once more. Collins delivered a commanding performance, adding another laurel to his record at the Spencer event.
The winner completed twelve laps in 6 minutes 11.4 seconds as Slim Rutherford of Whiting Indiana finished second and Harry Weat of Tulsa Oklahoma third. Heavy rain made the track unusually slick causing the race’s only accident when Bob Perry of Mason City bounced into the fence but escaped serious injury. Collins won the three lap event with a 1:45 time.
The Plymouth County Old Settlers association led Merrill agricultural days closing with a two day program featuring a 70th wedding anniversary for Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Crouch of LeMars, Civil War veteran Mr. Crouch among the few living in the state. James Robertson elected president. P. B. Heald of Hinton secretary. 100 plus attendees. Officials noted long residency averages over six decades. awards and standings announced for horse, harness, and gaited classes led by locals from Merrill LeMars and nearby towns.
Gilbert Lindenman accepted the linotype operator job at the Hawarden Independent in Hawarden. He began work Monday and had been with the Ireton Ledger for seven years, serving as managing editor for three. Lindenman and his family plan to move to Hawarden around October 1.
Friends in LeMars received word Thursday of the death of Dana P. Long a well known former Le Mars resident at his Hamburg Iowa home last week where he lived in recent years. He was about 74 and leaves a wife and step children. He was son of Joseph Long first station agent in LeMars for the Chicago Minneapolis and Omaha railroad and grew up here. His sisters Lillian and Josephine and a brother Merriam were well known among LeMars early day residents. In LeMars he attended high school and took interest in telegraphy becoming an expert operator. He later worked for the Omaha and St Paul railroad at Laverne Minnesota and in other railroad depots.
In Montana towns he worked as an operator before leaving the railroad to enter grain commission and stock brokerage in LeMars, where he maintained an office for many years. A famed youth athlete, he won bicycle prizes and in the gay nineties drove fine horses, played polo, supported baseball, and was known for engaging personality and brilliant conversation.

A prominent Remsen wedding took place Tuesday at St Marys Church with Rt Rev Msgr M A Schemel officiating. Miss Clarinda Krier and Lawrence Wurth, both locals, were married in white satin with pink and white decor. The reception and dinner for 65 relatives and farm neighbors followed at the bride’s mother’s home, with 75 attending supper.
Six men arrested during a church benefit barbecue near Alton were exonerated of gambling charges after the district attorney's office asked for dismissal Deputy DA Donald Avery said the case could not yield a conviction and Police Judge William Keller who presided at the raid granted the plea $448.05 seized as evidence was returned to the church to fund underprivileged children's Christmas baskets A young Marian Klein 19 died after a long illness at her home east of Alton Funeral services were held at St Mary's church in Alton She is survived by her parents three brothers and three sisters including Mrs Eq win Budden Mrs Edward Vander Hart Gerald Klein and others The family has the sympathy of many friends
Work on three new LeMars homes in the south part of town is progressing. Dr L O Toole and Hale Parker are building on Fourth avenue SE. Dr O Toole's residence will be between George Kluckhohn and the B C Woolley homes as men finish pouring this week.
The report notes footings in place and completion expected by Christmas for the Parker home across the street. Leo Nemmers, local contractor, aims to finish the O'Todlle residence first while N. W. Wiltgen roof tops Miss Etta McNeill's new Central Ave home near the city library, with readiness anticipated before cold weather.
Hawarden city council will consider bids October 15 for remodeling the municipal electric plant plus a 26 by 74 foot south addition, new Diesel unit, piping, switchboard and wiring. Four sections may be bid separately or together. Engineering firm Buell and Winter estimates total cost at 90000, including a water cooling tower already built. Funds come from cash on hand in the electric fund and sale of Simmer law bonds earned by net municipal electric system, not taxes. Franklin school notes describe first grade with 34 pupils, 29 boys and 5 girls, with absences and new joiners. Second grade lists 33 pupils, 15 boys and 18 girls, noting new students from Clark and Milwaukee.
