O'Brien R E A To Pay Refunds

The Sheldon Sun reports the O'Brien County Rural Electric Cooperative board approved patronage refunds for the first 14 years of operation totaling 3641.59 dollars covering August 1939 through 1940. Payments will be proportional to energy purchased and issued soon. Membership rose from 159 in Sept 1939 to 1,406 current.

O'Brien county REA reports loans and growth in 1950s

The O'Brien County Rural Electrification Association shows an average consumption of 2318 kilowatt hours per member with 48 members using 600 to 800 KWH. It has secured $706,500 in six government loans, with $555,77.36 advanced for operations. Repayments total $93,642.69 and early payments add $70,409.71. Patronage refunds come from surplus earnings after loan retirement. A new 40 by 60 foot quonset storage building in Primghar, to store a truck and materials like transformers and wire, arrived recently and should be usable this winter once weather permits.
