Flaherty And Carley Receive Veteran Honors In Le Mars
Two longtime army servicemen from Le Mars were honored Monday evening with Iowa National Guard recognitions. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Ronald Carley received the National Guard Achievement Award for over 20 years of service. Capt. Leo R. Flaherty, recently retired, earned a letter of appreciation from Gov. Harless and major retired status. Presentations were made by Lt. Col. Ed Sullivan, commander of the Second Mechanized Battalion. Flaherty was promoted to major in the Iowa Army National Guard effective Oct. 28, 1963, with a long career including service in the ERC and USAR and leadership of Co. K, 133d Infantry.

Army officer with 34th Infantry through World War II
Lt. Col. Carley served on active duty with the 34th Infantry Division from 1941 at Camp Claiborne Louisiana and remained with the unit through the war. He was later recalled to active service with Army Ground Forces Headquarters at Fort Monroe Virginia and completed a career of 20 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. A well known area resident, he farms in the Le Mars community.

Merritt School announces an open house Friday night November 8 from 7 30 to 9 30 in observance of American Education Week. Teachers in all rooms will present informal progress reports in staggered sessions at the Main building 7 30 and 8 30 and in the New building at 8 00. Troop 114 plans a weiner roast at the next meeting with Debbie Stover to bring treats in two weeks.
