Memorial Day Services at City Cemetery and Catholic Cemetery

Memorial Day services will be held at Merrill city cemetery at 10:30 AM and at the Catholic cemetery shortly after. Burton Dull of Le Mars will deliver the principal address. Legionnaires and veterans are invited to attend in caps. A free Dutch lunch will follow for Legion and auxiliary members. The program includes band selections, invocations, Gettysburg Address, Memorial Address, salutes, and firing squad.

Commencement Exercises Honors Class of 1951 at Local School

The Senior Class of 1951 was honored at Commencement on May 22 in a filled auditorium. Superintendent J F Kissinger handed diplomas to seven graduates including five boys and two girls. Rev J L Johannaber spoke on freedom grounded in faith, and valedictorian Gordon Jacobs led the remarks. Awards for Citizenship, American Legion Auxiliary leadership, School Annual, Athletic, and Scholarship honors were announced, with ties resolved for several honors.

Grant Little Giants Plan 4-H Activities and Tour

The Grant Little Giants met May 14 at the Olt home. Members discussed a 4-H short course June 25 28 with Donald Janssen as candidate. A club tour is set for June 19 morning and dinner at Borchers home. Judging will follow last year’s order. Three workouts are planned. Fitting and Showing demonstration countywide in early August. July record looks check and clipping feed records to be kept. Janssen spoke on Livestock Breeding and Borchers on Training and Polishing Horns.

Letter Highlights Le Mars Roots of Chicago Family

In a Reader's Letter dated May 23 1951 the writer recalls visiting Charles Plath son of S L Plath. The Plath family left Le Mars 30 years ago for Chicago and now resides at 737 North Oakley Avenue with his wife and two boys. S L Plath lives in Elmhurst with a daughter. Mr Plath is nearly 84 and readers will remember Plath's bakery.
