Gordon Alderman chaplain in the U S army and formerly stationed at Des Moines along with Duane Berner son of Ray Berner of Merrill visited the college to see friends on Wednesday.
The Western Union college summer session reports strong pre registrations compared with prior years. Dormitory rooms are being reserved for 12 weeks from June 1 to August 20. Extra teachers will be retained to teach this summer as many teachers seek to renew certificates and earn college credits beyond high school level.
The May themed event entertained rice freshmen and junior elementary teachers groups, with sophomores and seniors at a formal dinner Friday. Mrs. BE. L. Fiveoved sponsored the program featuring Norma Heralk as toastmistress and Thelma Brekice among participants amid spring decorations.
As chairman of the program committee he made a fine contribution. The group presented their teacher Mrs. Fireoved with a beautiful gift at the close.
The college executive committee members will meet next Saturday. Bishop HE. W. Praetorius may miss due to schedule conflicts with annual conferences. Out of town ministers Rev. O. M. Yaggy and Rev. H. EB. Hiller will attend the meeting.
The senior class presented a book shelf to the college library during the memorial week chapel hour. Basil Grimes led the presentation, Dr. Garret B. Kempers accepted for the school, Esme Zenk gave the valedictory, and Maxine McNulty delivered the salutatory. The peace pipe ceremony passed to junior president Gerald Walder as part of senior tradition.
A ribbon bearing the year and class name was added to the peace pipe, a revered red pipestone relic. The update marks a shift in how successive student groups are labeled, preserving a historic Indian artifact’s significance.
The Gleam issue includes nine biographies and campus news eight pages long. Senior class members are pictured with the commencement speaker Rev. H. B. Hiller. Two year training graduates have a group photo with Mildred Baer and Bonnie Burgard as co editors.
A group of forty new aviation cadets arrived on commencement day in LeMars. Supervisor H. J. Haas arranged provisions for their stay in Wernli hall. The girls moved out at year end, causing little inconvenience as the term closed.
The college alumni held the annual meeting in the afternoon to welcome class of 1948 members. Officers were elected for three years: Dr. M. Miller president, Dr. A R Hershberger vice president, Mrs. B F Buehl secretary, Mrs. Russell Knapp treasurer. Dr. Harlan Heim of Humboldt Nebraska was named alumni representative on the college board of trustees.
Within two weeks the 1943 summer session at Western Union College will open. Registrations for the session will take place on June 1. Rooms are being reserved for girls in Union Hall, with some rooms in other college buildings available if a shortage of living quarters for summer students becomes apparent.
All members of the executive committee were present except Bishop EB. W. Praetorius last Saturday. Items left open after the trustee board meeting last March were completed and approvals granted for expenditures related to the expansion.

Mrs. Chapin was formerly Kate Darling and grew up on a local farm. Funeral services for Mrs. August Vander Hamm were held May 19 at St. Pauls Lutheran, with Rev. H. W. Krieger officiating. Mrs. Vander Hamm died May 16 at age 85. Several local residents and neighboring families attended and a wide obituary of community life is noted.
