A team of horses owned by John Johnson of Hinton bolted while he planted corn and rolled up wire Saturday afternoon. The horses damaged the planter before they were stopped, George Sullivan reports.
Le Mais Chamber of Commerce president L L Meek apologizes for giving wrong information to papers about a donation. He says the Spanish American War veterans did not give, instead the Louis Brick auxiliary contributed from their small treasury to help decorate the town.
Donald Johnson was seriously injured Monday noon while plowing near his home southwest of Ireton. He fell from a tractor during a sharp turn, his foot caught in the plow clutch. He suffered a bruised leg a wrenched back and facial cuts and bruises.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Mulder of Orange City celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in the Netherlands on Thursday. He is 82 and she is 81. A family reunion followed with children listed: Mrs. John Van Zanten, Chas. Mulder, Mrs. Herman Fedders, Mrs. John Lystogt, Wm. Mulder, Sheldon, Henry Mulder, Bastian Mulder.
Mrs. John Herman underwent surgery at Hawarden hospital to remove her right eye due to glaucoma. Surgeons believed removal would halt infection spread to the other eye. Mrs. Herman withstood the procedure well and has returned home to Hawarden.
Mrs. Matt Brown of Merrill announces the marriage of her daughter Marjorie Forne to Elliott Clayton Lee of Onawa. The ceremony was Jan 31 in Blair with Rev. John B. Brooks officiating. The bride, a Merrill high school graduate of 1938, teaches at Soldier. the groom, deputy recorder of Monona County, is a Soldier high school and Grand Island business institute graduate. After May 15 they will reside in Onawa where he is employed.
A new Home Nursing class at Liberty Consolidated School taught by Plymouth County Public Health Nurse Miss Millie Quaas meets Thursday evenings. Mrs J J Rance chairs arrangements and equipment for about 15 enrolled ladies. The Witling Workers club in Preston township begins Red Cross sewing each Wednesday at Mrs Clarence Gamble’s home, planning to produce two dozen kit bags for soldiers this week. A county donation of 65 knitted garments and 18 sewn articles arrived from Westfield and Sunnyside communities, with Mrs Dorothy Sanford and Mrs Walter Nelson credited for the work. The Plymouth County Red Cross executive board met with strong branch representation and a report by Executive Secretary Mrs O D Hart notes aid to 35 service men over the past year.
Ireton special correspondent reports Mrs Henry Collins hosts Bob Collins and daughter from Hawarden. Sunny Hawarden residents Mr and Mrs Wm De Vos and sons called Saturday. Iowa State College spring quarter enrollment totals show a 344 decline from last year, to 5436. The drop, felt mainly in graduate programs likely due to war and drafts, is offset by an uptick in the Engineering division which rose to 1829.
