Soloists and small groups from LeMars High School will represent at the East Sioux City subdistrict contest on March 24 and 26, chosen at the March 3 home elimination. The vocal section meets 4 pm in room 4, with instrumental at 7:30 pm in the main high school auditorium. Admission covers expenses. Betty Ann Willging soprano and Dorothy Laux mezzo-soprano headline a program including Do You Know My Garden and Sing Me To Sleep, with many other local students listed among performers.

The $25,000 damage action against the Illinois Central railroad over the December death of James C Mead, a Western Union college student, when his car was hit by a passenger train, was moved Tuesday from district to federal court in Sioux City by order of District Judge D C Browning. Mead was one of four students killed in the crash. The suit is brought by Ernest Mead, administrator of the student’s estate.

Relatives and neighbors celebrated Mrs. William Jennings birthday on Friday evening March 3 with cards, Chinese checkers, social visiting, and a luncheon. Guests included the Jelken, Jennings, Meyer, Kruse, Ludwigs, and other local families.
Mr and Mrs Fremont Muecke returned from a motor trip to old Mexico City praising improved roads from the U S border and mountain grades that made driving a pleasure They noted oxen driven farming with hand planting and hoe cultivation versus machine farming here They saw both modern and poorly built buildings and witnessed a bull fight where eight bulls were killed during their trip across Mexico and the United States.
Joe Steinfadt, formerly of LeMars, died Monday evening at Akron hospital after a fall in health since a minor stroke last fall. Funeral services were held Thursday at Ross funeral home and Lutheran church in Hawarden, with burial at Grace Hill Cemetery. He was born December 9, 1860, in Meklinburg Germany, married twice, and is survived by seven children across Iowa Minnesota and LeMars, plus grandchildren and a great grandchild.
In a regular session the LeMars city council opened bids for the coming fiscal year. Cambier's won the gasoline contract at 3.1 cents per gallon under regular station price. Moore Lumber Co. secured the coal contract. Printing bids were lively with The Le Mars Sentinel awarded legal publications at 40 percent of the regular price and Harold Kolker and The Globe Post winning other printing needs. Council adjourned to meet March 28.

A joint birthday party was held on Saturday March 4 for Mrs Dick Kruse and her granddaughter Clara Jelken, Clara’s tenth birthday. Guests included the Jelken and Kruse families, and Mrs Lizzie Nannen, Rev Theo Meyer, and others. A social afternoon and evening were followed by a lunch.

Relatives and friends gathered Sunday afternoon to remind Mrs. Harry Westhoff and Mrs. Arnold Westhoff of their birthdays. Guests included the Lubben and Brunken families, Westhoff and Oetken relatives, Onken and Janssen families, plus Carl Ahrendt Jr and Irene Octken. An afternoon of social visiting featured pinochle and Chinese checkers, followed by luncheon, with wishes for many more birthdays.
