Breaks neck in fall off stack near Ireton

Fred Oaken suffered a severe neck injury Wednesday while working in a hay field south of Ireton when reaching for a pitchfork caused a fall from a hay load. The accident fractured the fifth cervical vertebra, and he was taken to a local facility for treatment.

Local visits and community notes from Oyens and LeMars area

Oyens residents Mrs Josephine Kohns Mrs Henry Rupp and Mr and Mrs Lester Rupp of Cherokee visited at the Hentges home on Sunday. Josephine Hentges spent a week in LeMars visiting friends. Carolyn Doud works at a LeMars beauty shop. Mrs Joe Kemp hosted a quilting party on Thursday. Rev Joseph Boland S J of LeMars, newly ordained, celebrated mass at St Catherine's Monday. Boland's mother is a niece of the late Jas J Tierney of Oyens. Joe Kemp attended an Eagles state convention. Jens Kloster buys the John Kaiser corner and starts a new filling station. William Cross of Remsen visited Charles Masuen Saturday. Mrs John Meis and Mrs Ben Mansen joined the LeMars ladies' aid card party Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Will Schnepf visited relatives in Adrian Minnesota over the weekend. Jake Doud builds a tennis court north of his store. Rev Rolfes visited LeMars Wednesday. Mrs John Meis with Maurice Carrigan and children Paula Michael John plus granddaughters Susan Honora Nancy drove to Pocahontas Monday to spend the day with the F J Lorge and Jug Senoots family.

Ladies Aid Meeting and Local Social Gatherings

The Ladies Aid plans a hall meeting on June 30. Nebraska visitors include Mrs. Ben Coper of Elgin and Mr and Mrs Lester Carey of Ewing who spent time with Elam Chapman and Orville Cooper. Mrs A D Jeffers dined with Mr and Mrs Chris Hendrickson in Alton. The De Raad and Gelder households enjoyed a lakes weekend. The Women's Home Missionary Society met at Mrs J M Kunath with a large turnout and elected officers for the year: president D F McArthur, VP Albert Hawkins, secretary Bert Criswell, treasurer G Osborne, supply secretaries Harry Buss and Co W Reeves, spiritual life Mrs T C Batholomite, mite box secretary Marshall Rees, tenten secretary Roy McArthur, thank offering Mrs Earl Chapman, missionary education Mrs Will Hawkins.

J C Penney Staff Highlights Thirteen Salespeople

The store employs thirteen regular salespersons with extras added as needed. Homer Steeg, assistant manager, has eight years with the company. Staff includes Vance Trafford, Bob Kempker, Henry Peterson, Miss Gwynne Wormley, Elizabeth Nemmers, Edith Schroeder, Beverly Clarke, Marguerite Smith, Mrs Theo Thoma, Mrs Clarence Nason, and Mrs Amanda Thomas. All full-year employees receive two weeks paid vacation. J C Penney operates in 1500 plus cities with policies centered on the golden rule and potential partnership toward possible ownership.
