A lengthy Merrill social column records numerous visits, trips and gatherings. Hosts Mrs Mell Schmied and Mrs L H Armbright entertained 16 guests for a luncheon honoring Mrs Charity Hart who will return to Portland Oregon later this month. Many relatives and friends were mentioned across visits to Sioux City LeMars and Des Moines with trips to Alexandria Minnesota and activities including birthdays picnics and a bridge session.
Fredonia residents Mr. and Mrs. Lou Larson called on Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Juhl Thursday evening. Andrew Juhl planned a trip to Howard South Dakota to visit relatives. Albert Lundgren and Andrew Bogh were visitors from LeMars on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. H P Mortensen and daughter Bolina visited relatives in LeMars last week.
G E Silers of LeMars was in Craig on business Tuesday. Mrs W R Gaar and children of LeMars visited Craig friends late last week. J F Renken and family were Sunday guests at the L H E Thunhorst home in Hinton. August Ludwig enjoyed a visit from his father and a brother from Alcester S D. Edward Schilling and family from near Akron were visitors at the H J Ludwig home Sunday. Herman Schmidt went to Hawarden hospital for bladder trouble caused by rheumatic complaint. Thieves reportedly entered an Ireton oil station and stole 100 gallons of kerosene. N C Shanks and Miss Amanda Zempel visited at the John F Johnson home. Miss Zempel studies nursing in Rochester Minn. John Freiberg near Craig played his accordion on WNAX Yankton, recalling old dances in Craig. Thomas Trebina, a Hinton section hand, was hit by buckshot while Adlai Bogenrief shot rats near the Farmers elevator. Trebina may go blind. Mr and Mrs Charles Riter of Sioux Falls visited, then took their mother Mrs Furchner to Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars for observation. Mr and Mrs Seem planted a bridge party. bride Ima Johnson of Fall Creek Wis wed Everett Wellenfeldt Saturday in Bloomer Wis. They will visit Illinois then New York, where the groom will study to be a teacher. The editor and wife visited Trent S D. Harvy Howard returned with them to live here. The dry spell eased by a soaking rain last Saturday. small grain is heading out and stands are thin. corn remains in good color and size for the season.
Mr and Mrs John Johnson and family spent Tuesday evening at B C Borchers home. John Plueger and sons along with G Seibens and Ben Fischer visited Herman Wegen. Ben Toel called on John Kallsen. Wm Plueger celebrated his birthday with relatives and friends Tuesday. John Johnson visited Plueger Friday. The Van Buskirk funeral last Wednesday drew a large crowd. Henry Ommen Sam Diediker and families visited Martin Johnson Sunday. Ben Toel shoppers at Le Mars Saturday. Gert Wilken and Alfred Grasz visited August Borchers Thursday.
Ted Besh of the Pioneer Cow Testing association in Black Hawk County reports that crowded stalls and close stanchions lead to crushed teats in dairy cows. In five months 23 cows had teats trampled, with some losing quarters and others showing hard milking teats, recoverable only by operation. injuries mainly affect large udder cows. He urges spacing stanchions to give cows more room, noting cost barriers but potential simple spacing solutions.
South Dakota State College hosts the third annual Farm and Home Day in Brookings on Thursday July 12 with plan to attract record crowds. Governor Theodore Christianson and L N Crill will speak. events include contests races and a big hitch demonstration. County groups provide music and a noon picnic, while demonstrations and experimental plots run from 10 am. Minnehaha won in 1926 and Codington in 1927 for attendee banners.
About 50 Dallas county poultry raisers toured county farms on June 18 showcasing best practices in poultry management. Highlights included Mrs. Har ry Frakes Adel whose flock finances farm buildings and land, Dean Wescott Linden with clean ground systems using potato plantings for green seed, and S. O. Miller Moran with 165 young turkeys raised in incubators and gravel yards to prevent blackhead. Other farms visited were Hanysh Dawson Kirgis Perry Smiley and Shields Dallas Center. The event, sponsored by Dallas County Farm Bureau and Iowa State College poultry extension specialist W R Whitfield, is believed to be the state’s first poultry tour.
May figures from Iowa State Extension show 411 cows culled as unprofitable out of 32,863 tested across 92 associations. About 2,300 farmers benefited from cow testing last month, with three years of data showing rising cull rates, fewer cows purchased, and more sold for dairy in the past, signaling a shift toward beef production as profitability declines.

H C Cain of O’Brien county leads May with 64.7 pounds per cow across eight grade Holsteins, milking over twice daily. Other top producers include Elmer Gallentine Marshall 54, Ben Olson Benton No. 8 50.5, E P Hayes Washington 50.1, O G Watson Pocahontas 49.7, L C Lenth Elkader Volga 49, and Menges and Gamm Fayette 48.8.
