After the war began planners led by Rexford Tugwell to reduce sugar production in Puerto Rico and Cuba. Puerto Rico’s 1941 crop dropped from 1,147,000 to 728,000 tons, a loss of 424,000 tons, as fertilizer and ship access were curtailed. Cuba’s sugar workers faced upheaval under the experiment.
In 1933 Tugwell is cited praising government planning to create a sugar shortage and socialize basic industries. Gerrit Juffer family and SM2c and Mrs Theo Juffer left for lakes for a visit. Frieda Johnson Hill and Patty Johnson of Washington state arrived for a relatives visit. Hill formerly owned City cafe. M B Edwards and daughter spent days at the lakes then visited Mrs Margaret Pereboom before heading to Denison Ta.
