Reverend Degen to Lima Peru for five year mission

Rev Jerome A. Degen, Heelan High School instructor in Sioux City for three years, departs Friday July 27 for Lima Peru for a five year Society of St James mission. Bishop Mueller will officiate a departure Mass at Cathedral of the Epiphany on July 26 with Rev Reymond Kevane delivering the sermon. Degen will spend four months in Lima attending language school before serving as parish priest in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The Society of St James, founded in July 1958, recruits U.S. priests for Latin America. Degen is a Granville native a St Joseph high school graduate who earned a BA from Loras College and studied at Mt Saint Bernad Seminary.

Mr and Mrs John Shearon Jr report their son Pat and other high school students on a Western states and world fair bus tour. They arrived at the fair early Saturday and noted the group bunking for 1 dollar nightly at Queen Anne's auditorium. Some members received airmail letters at the address in Seattle while the tour remained through Thursday. They visited Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks and held a gym party with dancing in Seattle.

Legion Topples Anthon 12-2 in six innings

Le Mars Junior Legion defeated Anthon 12 to 2 in six innings under the 10 run rule. Gunther allowed two runs on three hits. Nairn went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Doornick 2 for 4. Paul Fox doubled for a key late hit and Wiltgen, Dornick, and Nairn contributed to the scoring. Next up is Perleys Diner of Sioux City in Le Mars Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Le Mars Little League All Stars Beat Newell 7 3

Le Mars Little League All Stars won their first game of the tournament 7 to 3 over Newell. Newell scored in the first and second innings, but Le Mars answered with a four run third highlighted by home runs from Korff and Maose. Rick Mayrose struck out nine while allowing three hits. Le Mars advances to face Dennison in Sac City Monday afternoon.

Le Mars traveled to Sioux City to face Morningside Mer chants at Loos Park and won 7 to 0. Nairn and Morton opened the second inning with walks, Thompson hit a single driving in both runners, and Baack plated Warnock after a double. McCabe, Stub, Gunther and Strub contributed in later innings as Le Mars extended the lead.

Gunther hits homer for Le Mars in five inning win

Gunther homered to left field clearing Soo's 330 foot fence to lift Le Mars past the Merchants. He pitched five innings allowing four hits while Steve fanned eleven batters and issued no walks. Darkness halted the game after five innings as Soo's Park lights require a $20 deposit to operate.
