A reader letter attacks union organizers and the War Labor Board for seizing business during wartime. It argues the WLB bullied employers while betraying workers rights, citing the New York newspapers versus delivery men dispute where publishers kept property and the WLB halted extended contracts. The piece concludes workers may now distrust government.
An organization studies conditions under which foreign slave laborers worked in Nazi Germany. They find Nazis extended social security benefits to slaves, a scheme rooted in Bismarckian policy. Senator Robert Wagner, a German immigrant, is blamed for smuggling in this foreign racket to America.
Miss Dorcas Knapp returns from a trip to Alexandria Louisiana visiting her brother George Knapp at Camp Livingston and Mr and Mrs Richard Coleman in Memphis Tennessee. Many locals attend a Fourth of July picnic at Riverview Park and River sioux park crowds. Mrs Florence Knapp hosts Ladies Aid on July 12. Weekend fishing trips to Lake Okoboji and Spirit Lake are shared by several residents. Families visit relatives in Hawarden and Emmetsburg while others attend weddings and anniversaries. The community also notes hospital progress of Mrs T A Dennison and visits by Rev Bert Young formerly of Honolulu.
A wide range of local social visits and family news fill the LeMars region pages. Guests include A. L. Wilcox and Edith Spaulding at the Lyle Hubbel home, and Mrs. Ray Bullock learning of her husband’s injuries from a transport plane crash near Vicksburg with Sgt. Bullock as the sole survivor hospitalized in Jackson Mississippi. Numerous visits to and from nearby towns, hospital news, church guild gatherings, summer travels, and residents moving between LeMars, Sioux City, Vermillion, and Portland are noted alongside ongoing home projects and family milestones.
Sunday dinners at the Herman Page home near Merrill were attended by Hinton families including the Baack and Page households. The Nu club plans a July 20 meeting at Alma Weinrich’s home, while many families from Hinton and nearby towns gathered for picnics, visits, and birthday celebrations at various homes and Riverside Park in Sioux City.
Mrs Minnie Hartter has her farm house re-shingled. Sioux City visitors included Mrs Matt Bruscher Mrs Peter Johansen and Mrs Mary Smith. Many neighbors and relatives visited the Johansen Strub and Johansen homes during the week with calls from Mr and Mrs Henry Petersen Donna and Dick and Judy and Kenny Bruscher.
Arnold Joransen is now stationed on Guam aboard a Marine unit. The transfer places him in the Pacific theater as US forces maintain a foothold in the western Pacific region.
IRFTOR reports the birth of a daughter Carol Pauline to CPM and Mrs Lloyd Vande Water at Sacred Heart hospital LeMars on Thursday July 5. Grandmother Mrs Hal Vande Water of Parker S.D. visited for the newcomer. Irwin Jonason merchant marines and Miss Marjorie Houston of Ireton were guests at Alvin Hills home LeMars Tuesday. Families Bergsma and Dorst, and others attended events, with visits to Hawarden and Alco ster. Katherine Eifert visiting parents Rev and Mrs C D Hifert in St Paul.
A flurry of visits and travel notes from Hawarden and Orange City residents are recorded. Mrs. Louisa, Hartley kin, Marjorie Conover, Nan Boekel, Gene Lindenman and others are mentioned visiting Sioux City Des Moines and neighboring homes. Elmer Huesinkveld plans California departure while Rev J R Van Dyke and family plan Minn. travel.
