Ballots will be mailed Friday July 8 to 3,336 eligible Plymouth County ASC farm owners and operators. Each ballot includes an envelope and secrecy instructions. Voting ends July 15 with three ASC committeemen and two alternates to be chosen. ballots counted July 19. Delegates to the county convention will be named at Le Mars July 30.
A lengthy letter from Knoxville Iowa thanks Le Mars Red Cross volunteers for sweaters issued to about 1600 patients at the Knoxville Veterans Hospital. It notes 75 to 80 Red Cross volunteers assist daily in therapy, social events, and occupational activities, with support from 13 surrounding chapters and local government funds.
Friday marked the first day of Iowa’s new 30 million dollar a year tax gauge. Sales tax rose to 6 percent on gasoline and higher rates on many items while essentials like motor vehicles retained lower rates. The Globe Post reports a likely out-of-court settlement granting Irene Cook Mordoff, Glendale California, half of the $40,000 estate of the late Joe Cook. Mordoff claimed adoption by estoppel as an adopted daughter. no formal adoption occurred. The remaining half is to go to Mr Cook's other children and sisters after debts and costs are paid.
William Smith, longtime Le Mars resident now living in Long Beach, California, died suddenly on a train bound for home after a three week visit with relatives. Death was due to a heart attack while en route near Kimball Nebraska. Survivors include three sons Russell, Walter and Herbert, two daughters and seven grandchildren. Funeral arrangements had not been made. Also noted are registrants at a physical education conference at Town Center Continuation.
Westmar College is among seven Evangelical United Brethren colleges to receive 500000 from the United Crusade Fund of 5150000 set to be inaugurated by the church group on Friday. About one million will back new church construction in new areas. Combined with local donations, leaders expect a 26 million dollar building program in four years across the denomination with 10000 Iowa members in about 450 congregations including eight in Des Moines.
Miss Helen Koetz of Le Mars died Friday July 1 at Sacred Heart hospital after a two week illness. Born January 13 1877 she was 78. A seamstress with sister Cuey for years the pair lived at 427 Plymouth St NE. Funeral July 4 at St Josephs Magr J D Fisch officiating 8:30 am burial Calvary cemetery Wittgen Luedtke directing. Survivors include sister Lucy of Le Mars. she was preceded by parents and sister Celina.
Sidney Vander Griend of Sheldon Tawito won first prize in the Floyd Valley Watershed Association membership drive at a directors meeting in Le Mars on Friday night. He enlisted 125 members. First prize was a free fishing trip for two to Red Indian Lodge in Ontario, Canada. Oscar Eason of Allen Iowa took second prize a one week free fishing camp for one at Nestor Falls Ontario. George Euson, association president, announced a budget committee and plans for a Sioux City fundraising drive to support watershed work. Eason voiced optimism over Floyd Valley Development with growing conservation farming and new ferrites to hold water.
The Le Mars region saw lighter rainfall than surrounding areas on Thursday evening. Ireton reported one and three fourths inches while Orange City logged two and a half inches. Le Mars recorded .37 inches of rain.
A two car collision occurred on the Merrill bridge about 2 45 p m Friday when Henry Olaf Gunion driving a 1951 Mercury in a southerly direction applied brakes causing a left front wheel lock and veer into an oncoming 1949 Packard driven by Philmer A Paulson. Passengers included G Union s wife La Von and children Ben and Connie. Damages totaled 200 for each car. The incident occurred during a period of pre printed papers and vacation preparation for the Globe Post.
Funeral services for Fred Varney 72 a farmer from the Pierson area who died Wednesday in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness were held at 9 30 a m today at the Manning O Toole funeral home. Rev Willard Cunningham of Whitfield Methodist Church officiated with burial in Park Cemetery May
