Three consuls general arrive in Le Mars for the centennial parade and founders day events with Gov. Ray due to attend. Consul A K Rothnie of Great Britain arrives 6:30 p m at Sioux City airport and departs Friday morning. Consul Brian O Ceallaigh from Ireland lands 11 p m Thursday only departing Thursday. Consul Nicholas Colling representing Luxembourg arrives 7:30 p m by car and leaves Friday. Gov Robert Ray arrives 9:30 a m Thursday for the centennial parade and founders day luncheon. O Ceallaigh born 1923 trained Dublin universities with a long career in Ireland external affairs.

Centennial Belles English Tea Show in Le Mars

The English tea fashion event titled English Tea Show will be held at Westmar on the campus in Le Mars with no admission charge. A silver tea will be collected to cover expenses, shuttle buses provided, and decorations by Mrs. Shrke. Local hosts include Mrs. Pavlik and Mrs. Smith with Marilyn Strickland and her court as guests.

Lakes tragedy claims teen in Okoboji crash

Thomas Michael Brodie, 18, Merrill, escaped serious injury in a freak early morning crash near Crescent Beach lodge Okoboji. Scott Larry Moore, 17, Waterloo, died when his car left the road, rolled into a lagoon and trapped him underwater. Moore was pronounced dead by Dr Don F Rodawig Jr. at the scene. Brodie was treated for minor cuts and bruises at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital and released.

Le Mars school district held a budget hearing Tuesday with two attendees. Supt. Vance Stead outlined a $200 490 increase driven by an instructional rise of $172 150 to fund four elementary teachers and the equivalent of seven more instructors across junior and senior high levels, plus about $26 550 for social security and retirement.

Kangaroo court ends in comic police chase and fines

A centennial kangaroo court in Le Mars drew 185 would be fugitives from justice, with police chief Hoeck cleared, Capt. Zimmerman pursuing suspects in a siren-lit chase, and culprits found in Orville Schuster’s truck garage. The Daily Sentinel notes the escapees may pay $1 fines at the Chamber of Commerce office.

Le Mars Centennial shuttle buses run all three days

Shuttle buses provided by Le Mars Community School District will operate continuously across Le Mars centennial events Thursday through Saturday. Regular service runs noon to 11 p.m. Thursday on east and west routes, with special pickups along routes. Friday and Saturdaywide schedules extend service to 11 p.m. and include several special shuttle runs to events such as the stunt flying at the airport, Dare Devil races, chautauqua, rodeo and kids parade.

Akron flood closes highway bridge on Big Sioux

High water on the Big Sioux River near Akron caused the Akron to South Dakota highway 48 bridge to close by 9 a.m. A 17.6 foot reading at Akron surpassed the 16 foot flood stage with a crest near 19 feet expected within 12 hours as Hawarden reports water receding. Floods at Hawarden reached about 23 feet.

Keep all alleys open in Le Mars

Police Chief Jim Hoeck urged residents to keep alleys free of parked vehicles across Le Mars, especially downtown where alleys are vital access as Central Ave is blocked for the Klein amusement midway. He warned alleys will be needed for fire lanes due to heavy celebration traffic.
