Stolen Car Wrecks North of Akron in High Speed Crash
The Akron sheriff’s office reported a wreck of a car six miles north of town after two men fled through town early Saturday. Floyd Baker of Sioux City and an unnamed soldier drove at high speed, left the road, and rolled the vehicle. Baker and the soldier were hospitalized in Sioux City. Later a call from Jim Bolton revealed his car had been stolen and identified as the wrecked vehicle. No charges filed yet.

Captain Thomas Birch Awarded Oak Leaf Cluster
Captain Thomas H. Birch of the 2nd Infantry Division in Czechoslovakia received the oak leaf cluster to the Bronze Star for gallantry on December 13 1944 near Monschau forest Germany. Melvin Gramke of Remsen returns home after forty years in military service. He began with K Company Le Mars and served in the Rangers and other hazardous units. He was discharged honorably at Jefferson Barracks Missouri after campaigns and missions. He came home from Fort Mead after a 1944 return and three weeks at home and now stays in Remsen to visit family.

Granville Soldier Discharged With 119 Points
Pec Joseph Plathe of Granville, son of Mr and Mrs B J Plathe, a veteran of the 34th division, was demobilized at Jefferson Barracks and arrived home. He went overseas February 18, 1942, served nearly 40 months in combat infantry, enlisted October 14, 1940, and earned the Bronze Star with five battle stars Rome Arno Naples Foggia Tunisian Italy Po Valley and the Apennines. Nick Kamp and his wife, Josephine Ruppert of LeMars, suffered a string of losses in a regional crime wave that hit Rock Rapids. Over weeks, Kamp’s station lost 15 tires and tubes, 350 gallons of gasoline, cash, gas coupons, auto accessories, and a five gallon oil can. The garage at the Kamp home was raided Monday night or Tuesday morning, netting two tires, while Standard Oil warehouses also saw a small theft. Private garages in the city reported break ins with no losses yet.
