Cornstalk Feed Kills Horses in Iowa Field

A special correspondent reports Clarence Vondrak lost two fine horses after feeding in a cornstalk field Sunday. The piece also notes a Farmers Elevator Co meeting in Hinton attended by many locals and lists multiple social visits and weekend travels among residents, including measles absence of Billie Beaulieu and neighbors in Sioux City, Sergeant Bluffs, and McCook Lake. A wet snow and northwest winds affected the area Monday night.

LeMars County Board Proceedings December 12 1938

The Plymouth County Board of Supervisors met in adjourned session with Chairman Twogood and Supervisors Grimses Graham Miller and Ahmann present. Minutes from December 8 were approved. Bonds for project 1540 FF awarded to Nebraska Bridge Supply Co as lowest bidder. Taxes for John and Ralph Hebeler settled for 100 dollars. Katherine Holzman care at Cherokee hospital settled for 1182.95, full equity. Unsuccessful bidders’ checks to be returned.

County Board Bills and Religious Reflection Note

A county board approved numerous bills including lumber, fuel, and maintenance costs for bridges culverts and roads. The meeting closed with a long religious reflection urging spiritual readiness for life after death and prayer in Jesus Christ.

Farm Trade And Local Visits Highlight Sioux City Market

Preston Rick Everichs shipped stock on Wednesday's Sioux City market. Fred Popken Jr invested in a new tractor for general farm work. Mr and Mrs Fred Brunken plus daughter visited the city Tuesday. Robert Dirks visited cousins the Grosenheiders. Parker brothers had stock on Wednesday's market. Herman Friedrichs began annual calls as assessor of Preston. Several farmers move to new locations on March 1 taking advantage of good weather and open roads to move machinery and belongings.

County Board Sets Doctors Contracts for Needy Care

The board approved contracts for county doctors with LeMars Clinic Fisch & Carnazzo and Dr G A Mauer at 3200 yearly for LeMars and surrounding townships. Akron district doctors Kerr Mattison Brunner totaling 1209 for Akron area. Kingsley Dr E J Liebity contract 400 renewed plus 400 for Dr Wolfson jointly serving four southeast townships. Merrill doctors R J Carlson and T C Knox cover south four and north four townships respectively. Total medical care payments 6400 yearly, up 400 from last year. Salaries for clerks and assistants adjusted. relief director Shelby Reed leads at 160 monthly, with engineer staff near 150.
