A business deal completed Saturday sees H F Ludwig purchase the gas station formerly run by Clarence Schmidt. Possession was given Monday as Schmidt expects to be called for army service soon. Community events include a Western Iowa conference pastors meeting on Tuesday January 27 with services, a shower for Mr and Mrs Kenneth Schulz, birthday honor for Mr Eggebrecht, and nursing class first meeting at the town hall. Fluorescent lights installed at H J Ludwig store with interior repaint planned.
Western Union Eagles meet Dubuque University in a conference tilt at the college gym on Friday night January 20. The Hawks of St Joseph face Trinity of Sioux City in a key rematch, while LeMars High meets South Sioux in Tri-State action with both squads seeking conference wins.
Beavers edged Eagles 47 to 41 as Western Union seized momentum in the second quarter. Beekman opened the scoring, with Horsfall and Borsheim contributing early for Buena Vista while the Eagles battled back with a nine free-throw stretch and a late lead before West Union pulled away.
Western Union fell short as Beekman and Lashier combined for 21 points, with Somerville leading Western Union scorers. Beavers capitalized in the second half while Buena Vista stifled late Western Union efforts. earnings from free throws told the tale as both teams battled for control and the Eagles faced a dry spell.

A surprise birthday party honored Mrs Ray Messelhseiser in Sioux City. Clark Hansen on furlough from the army attended a party in the Vondrak home before planned return to Indiana. Sioux City guests, dinner hosts, and weekend visits among local residents are noted.
