Pfc. Merton Jessen son of Mr and Mrs Elmer Jessen of Merrill remains on the missing in action list. Mrs B L Wilson says inquiries found no confirmation of a prisoner of war rumor, and he was reported missing in action in Germany as of December 16.
Mrs. D R Stewart 83 a pioneer of the section died Wednesday morning after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at the home and First Presbyterian church with burial in Pleasant Hill cemetery beside her husband. Survivors include one daughter, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren. several relatives from nearby towns attended. Mrs Stewart, born Audubon Indiana, moved to Ireton sixty years ago with D W Stewart, a pioneer blacksmith. She ran a cafe or china shop and supported community projects including the school, church and library. she is remembered as a fine citizen and neighbor.
A Franklin Elementary pupil framed a letter from Mrs Lucy Done of Bolton England thanking Miss Vera Buryanek and her class for a Christmas Junior Red Cross box. Mrs Done, wife of a 19 year British Army veteran and mother of two girls, expressed gratitude for the pupils’ kind gift sent during a visit through Manchester.
Ray Erlemeier 25, of Danbury area, died Tuesday afternoon when his manure spreader crushed him against a farm building. He slipped from the clutch at the steering wheel, losing control and crashing into the wall. A discharged Army corporal, he worked on his father Frank Erlemeier’s farm and is survived by his parents and several uncles and aunts near Hinton.
Mundelein Illinois January 20 readers letter laments War Department delay in delivering a package mailed July 20 and ten letters dating from August 10 that should have reached their son before October 10, the date he was killed in action. H E Rouse Sr. complains mail kept soldiers focused on morale while foxholes and dog deliveries cause delays.
Plymouth county war board chairman R L Weidauer urges all truck owners who have not received their first quarter 1946 gas coupons to call at the OPA office before January 31 to avoid stamp cancellation. If missed, they must file reinstatement with the ODT office at Sioux City.
Western Union college welcomes Wylie Miller from Holton Kansas as a sophomore returning after sickness. C B Ramsden of Sheldon has taken charge of the meat department at the A and P store succeeding Paul Burgan who is in the armed forces. Ramsden plans to relocate to LeMars soon as he settles in.
