Washington Two Farm Bureau Women Meet

Fire Does Heavy Damage At Hawarden
Hawarden volunteer firemen fought two and a half hours to control a blaze in Amelia Jacobs home on Avenue F. Fire Chief C H Sedgwick estimated damage at 4500 to 5000 dollars. Mrs Jacobs and her son Will were not home when the fire started. the alarm came from Mrs Robert Wright.

Fire destroys kitchen range and furniture in Anant area
A fire swept through a kitchen and damaged nearby patches and furniture, causing a total loss. Firemen reported insurance coverage totaling $2,600. The incident began in a kitchen range and concentrated damage in the basement area.
Wingert Construction Co. Finishes New Workshop in Remsen
Harley Wingert, former partner of Sk. J. Schumacher and C. J. Reilly in structural contracting, now runs the business alone from a rear residence workshop in Remsen. A 20 by 24 foot tile shop with alloy entrance and powered tools supports ongoing remodeling, new homes, and shop work as the firm keeps a smaller crew busy. Schumacher severed ties six weeks ago and plans to winter in California. his return is uncertain with several interior carpentry jobs to finish by March 1.

Hawarden Man Chosen County Supervisor for Ninth Year
Charles H. Sedgwick of Hawarden was re elected chairman of the Sioux county board of supervisors for the ninth consecutive year at the 1947 organization meeting. Pete De Vries of Sioux Center has 16 years on the board, one more than Sedgwick. Also named to the county welfare board were De Vries Sedgwick and Florence Kooyman. Abe Hemmingsen was elected foreman of the county bridge crew. County engineer K L Seliger was retained. A C Kleinjan and wife were named steward and matron of the county home. George De Jong was renamed courthouse janitor. Labor employees received a flat $25 raise per month, while Mrs Annabelle Hemstra social worker and the janitor received $20 more.

Wm. DeRaad Dies in Sleep at Home at 70
Ireton Iowa reporting that Wm DeRaad a 70 year old retired farmer was found dead in his bed at home in Ireton. Born April 9 1876 near Alton Iowa he leaves his widow one son Alvin of Ireton and three daughters in California. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Leo Comstock Dies in Hawarden Hospital After Illness
Leo Leslie Comstock born January 18 1895 at Eagle Grove Iowa moved to Hawarden as a child and later to Sioux City where he worked for Sioux Soya company. Funeral services were held at Barnard Funeral Home and Hawarden Methodist Church with burial in Grace Hill cemetery. Survivors include Alma his widow two sons seven daughters three sisters and two brothers.

Miss Ivah Green notes the contribution honors Iowa Centennial State Fair participation and Plymouth County rural schools will each receive a twelve by eighteen inch Iowa flag with US schoolroom flag wall holders, funded by standard school funds to cover costs.
